My wife has this friend back in MI and her son is in training for the reserves, he is at Fort Lee about an hour from our house here in VA. They (Army superiors) have been telling this kid that he gets a weekend pass during his training since he arrived but then they keep telling them no pass and then maybe a day pass and then weekend pass and around and around. Today is his pass but as of 8am they still haven't confirmed if it's a day pass or weekend or even what time they will let him leave the base.

Is this normal procedure for the military? Do they just like fecking with you about everything?

I think they are just fecked up, and that the by product.

How often do they get passes in combat? Afghanistan?

Break 'em down, build 'em up.

That's kind of what I told the wife.

Many moons ago, when I was in basic/ait at Ft Mcclellan, I believe we got around 3 or four passes the entire time (about 5 months)

When did they start getting passes for weekend drills?

Or did I read this wrong and the kid's unit is in pre-deployment training?

I took it as basic training before joining a reserve unit

didn't know Ft. Lee had basic training. Maybe he's in AIT or something.

He had basic training somewhere and then they shipped him to Ft. Lee for some secondary training. I don't actually know the kid so I don't pay much attention to what he's doing, I've just been listening to the wife complain about not knowing when to pick him up or how long he will be staying with us.

Yeah probably AIT. We did not get passes in Basic. What's his MOS? I think FT Lee is quartermaster stuff or supply.

Pretty sure the Army doesn't issue "passes" anymore. You are either in training, at work or off duty. In training - like basic or AIT, there were no passes. You were under supervision 24/7. In other training like Airborne or Air Assault school, same deal. In NCO training classes, it was normally a 9 to 5 class and you were free to do what you wanted to in the evening.

The army still does passes and yes, AIT still issues them for weekends.

OP, this kid probably just started AIT within the last few weeks. Something to always be expected is that the DIs will screw with the soldiers in the initial phases of training. What's going on here doesn't surprise me one bit.

Things have changed since I was in back in the early 70's. I was at Ft. Lee for AIT, we had no weekend or night restrictions whatsoever.
After final formation, it was off to the titty bars and where ever else you wanted to go.
Hell, I even lived off post for a couple of months with my wife. As long as I was back by first formation there was no problems.
However this was during the end of the Viet Nam era and discipline was shit, drug use was rampant and nobody gave a shit one way or the other.
