View Full Version : Off The Grid - Considering Permanently Deleting my Facebook Page

There is a disturbing phenomena in the world. Public shaming through social media. Over the last several days, I’ve watched the events unfold about Cecil the Lion’s killer and am seriously considering deleting my Facebook page completely. I hardly post there, but making one's self “electronically available” to be vilified and/or potentially destroyed by the "court of public opinion" seems to me to be setting one’s self up for problems.
This in no way should imply that I support the man or what he did. However, many people have lost their jobs, homes, etc. as a result of seemingly minor missteps in life. I think it’s ridiculous and in many cases underserved.
For those of you who have them, has anyone considered deleting their social media accounts as well?
Discuss.

What is this Facebook that you speak of?:waiting:
My privacy is very valuable to me.
I'll never do Facebook.
have a FB account, mostly due to a long ago forum outage, got an invite from Beadist to set up a FB account so we could keep yakking. don't post much, read some everyday.
have a linkedin acct, rarely view it.
as for the lion - that's another thread.
long, long ago, you could live in a small town and stay unknown. now, everyone can track you down and use your prior words and pics against you. so i watch what i say on FB. here...i'm a little looser with my posting, as this isn't as well known as FB.

Yup.
Never did Facebook, Tweeter, or any of that stuff. Posting every aspect of your life for all to see is odd to me. I prefer the anonymity of a regular run of the mill forum...

I on FAKE BOOK, to keep in touch with my kids and Grandson.....pix saved on my machine here....several other groups like my old hometown posting all the recollections of us getting older there, made a cyber friend who is of course married/granny just 2 years younger than me, but we laugh our asses off on some of the shit we remember from decades ago....
I not on twitter, or any other flaky group like that.....
so my use is limited to very old friends/groups/relatives....but the chat ASSpect is phenomenal old recollections dating back over 60 years for me.....

I think a lot of the young people have moved away from FB and onto Instagram, Snapchat, Vine, and to a lesser degree Twitter. Once the parent showed up the kids boogied. :Jeff '79:

I had a FB account when all my Corvette friends signed up. It seemed like "the thing to do" at the time.
Harmless enough, right?
Soon, I was being contacted by people I used to know, and NOT folks I really wanted to hear from again!
I deleted it.

That's the reason I'm on FB.

The main reason I still have FB is due to friends all over the world. It's the only way to keep in contact with each other on a regular basis. Sure, we could use email or the phone but how often will people do that. I know I don't call often and about the same for email. Yet, FB is there with a lot of the people I know and posting often. Just the other day so and so was promoted while in Yokota, Japan, so and so is back in Iraq, and the single mom deployed leaving the little one behind while missing him terribly.

I have no interest in FB, or anything similar. A couple of forums is pretty much the limit of my internet socializing.

Oh Mike,
You do realize that everything you've ever said on facebook is memorialized forever, right?
Hence why I don't do that shit.
6 degrees of separation and all of that shit. Even when you're not posting, your friends are tagging you. It's an endless realm of bullshit. I refuse to go down that path, and my daughter has chosen the same path.

No, I didn't. Details? :bigears:
I spoke to my kids and they said a lot of people in college are now on Twitter and Instagram and don't use Facebook much. I had a Twitter account which I deleted not long ago. I had maybe 4 tweets. My g/f turned her Facebook account off. I'm ready to just get rid of the whole thing. Nothing I do is that important or newsworthy that everyone has to know. And the resulting grief people get. IMHO Social Media has gotten completely out of hand and isn't worth it.

I use FB to communicate with our kids, see what they're posting about the grandkids, etc., but I understand OP's concern. You can lock down your account pretty well to keep out non-friends, but the only way to ensure invisibility is probably to close it completely.
Another aspect: It's common for employers to look for social media accounts of job applicants, and current employees for that matter, and I'm not sure that everyone realizes that. I have an acquaintance who was off from her job on temporary disability due to some emotional/mental issues (depression, etc.), and her employer was being understanding enough to hold her job for quite a while. Then she started yakking on FB about a concert in Atlantic City that she went to & how she was feeling great. About 2 days later her employer contacted her saying that they could no longer hold her job for her, and that she was terminated. I don't think that was a coincidence.

There is. But a person doesn't have to participate.
True. But consider this cliff notes version of something that really happened:
Two guys are at a programmers convention. They're having a conversation between themselves and make some sort of lewd comment about women in general (don't know what the comment was). Girl sitting behind them gets offended, takes their pic, puts it up on her FB page and scolds them for what they said. The pic goes viral. One guy is recognized by his boss and fired from his job. The programming community then turns on the girl, sending death threats and breaking into and crashing the servers at the company SHE works for. She then loses HER job.
Those guys weren't "participating" and were, in my view, innocent victims.
Can you believe this shit? :willy:

I have an account to primarily keep up with the a few close friends and family. Don't post much, just a "like" now and then. No games, no polls, no finding out how Texan I am, etc., and the settings are "friends only", with all tags requiring my approval.

I delete mine every once in a while. I feel that its like sorting through emails without a spam filter. The news feed has taken the place of pop-up ads. Plus, most people only post the highlights of their lives, which gives a very inaccurate facade that can become very easy to compare yourself to. Im a little mad my kickball team has decided to use it as the preferred form of communication.
Though I will say this, Ive connected to A LOT of people in the racing world through it.

Heh, she shoulda kept her mouth shut. "Oh, I was offended by two guys I don't know saying something." Dumbass, the law of unintended consequences made an appearance once again.

I felt a deep sense of uneasiness when Facebook was first explained to me... and then the horror stories started, and I knew I was right.
I'm sure it's groovy for businesses... but it's not for me.

I joined it about 3 years ago when a forum I was on went down, and got on Fb to keep up. Got all those unwanted invites, didn't wind up using it twice for that forum, stopped using it and haven't signed on in over 2 years.
This place is bad enough :D

While I lurk and consume a lot, I have very few things I want to say to the world in general, which is why I don't post much here, on CF, or other forums I'm on.
I've had a FB account for 4 or 5 years and think I've made one or two original posts. I reply occasionally to someones FB post, but never anything controversial. On the positive side, FB has put me in touch with several lost friends and acquaintances. I just ignore many of the friend requests and mostly communicate via FB messages.
I'm amazed at the people that feel the need to broadcast every facet of their lives and challenge everything they don't agree with.

Got no problem with FB other than my 83 y/o mom not understanding the concept and blurting out crap to my friends.
Given that, I'm not very likely to make a lewd comment about women in general.:seasix:

I have a FB account and find it annoying more than anything..
Pages load slow for me, and no matter how much I change email notifications they always find a new way to spam me.
On the good side It gives me a way to keep in touch with my family back in the US and see what they are up to.
I do think many people put way to much personal information out there, but who am I to talk..
On FB not so much, but do PUI there sometimes also.
But here.. while I rarely talk about personal issues, I have made it way to easy to find me (not that it matters)
Mailing address has been posted, Satellite photo of where we live with GPS shown on it..
...and even posted my phone number here once when I was bored while PUI
No one called me..
One thing that's kinda neat though..
At the same time if you google my name, nothing at all use to come up, and even now I am only mentioned in an obituary.
