How hard is it to cut glass? I have a mirror that has a corner broken off. I want to run a line and make a new edge that makes the mirror narrower and removes the broken corner. All I have is a cheapo hand glass cutter that I have never used. Any tips? Do I score both sides or just one? If just one, does it matter if it is the front or back? What can I smooth the edge with?
Score one side once. Rest on little ball of cutter at one end. Push down and snap.
It's hard to cut off less than about 1".
But a cheap piece of glass and practice.

Meh, just use a hammer. You'll have new edges all over very soon. :seasix::D

There are probably hundreds of youtube videos of various ways to cut glass.
Don't cut yourself. :cert:

I think all your questions except how to smooth the edge have been answered. You need some diamond faced sandpaper for that. I don't know if Lowe's or Home Depot sell it, but you can always take it to a glass shop and let them sand it.

I saw someone using what looked like a knife sharpening stone. Will that work?

I watched several Youtube videos on how to cut glass. They make it look so easy. I had some glass to practice on, and after about 10 cuts, I finally got the hang of it and cut the piece I needed for a window. Good luck. :seasix:

Is it worth a lot? Take it to a pro. Worthless? Go for it. Don't forget to sweep up the broken glass and break down the frame before you toss it :funny:

Right. Do that just before cutting the glass. Please get it on film :D

Complete FAIL.
If anyone needs about a thousand pieces of mirror, I have you covered. :D
oh, if it's tempered glass, you are screwed.

It wasn't. It was a cheap cutter though. I had a great straight edge. When I tried to snap it, it didn't break clean. I moved up, made a new line and the second break had a stray that traveled all the way up the mirror.
It was thick glass which didn't help.

Wear safety glasses. My brother got a chip of mirror glass in his eye doing exactly what you're doing. Probably a rare occurrence, but it wasn't fun.
