TOKYO — Honda is recalling nearly 700,000 Fit, Freed and City compact cars around the world for a defective spring part that may cause the engine to stall.

No accidents have been reported related to the problem, but at least 72 complaints were filed in Japan, and 29 abroad, Honda Motor Co. spokesman Tomohiro Okada said Thursday.

Recalled are 167,000 vehicles in Japan, 156,000 in China, and 233,000 in the rest of Asia, Tokyo-based Honda said.

About 122,000 cars are being recalled in North America.

The spring was placed improperly in a small box inside the engine, so that, in some cases, the problem could cause the engine to stall, Okada said.

The Fit is among the car models in Honda’s recall of nearly 700,000 cars.

We've had 3 Honda's and each has been flawless...dealership experience has always been outstanding...

Wife currently drives an 06 Accord EX-L V6...excellent vehicle. We would own one again, and probably will.

I used to swear by 'em, but the transmission issue with our '01 Odyssey has likely done us in as far as being a repeat buyer is concerned.

Class action lawsuit resulted in all 2001-04 Accords, Civics and Odyssey minivans recalled for premature (and sudden) transmission failure.

Honda extended the warranty up to 105,000 miles, but it did us no good last year when the tranny went tits-up on us. Ended up forking out nearly 4K parts and labor when all was said and done for a re-man unit with a five-year, 100k warranty. :kick:

What does your personal vehicle history have to do with a recall notice?

Manual transmissions didn't have a problem.

It's the Fit. Of course it's a POS.

A Fit POS is better than an out of shape POS. :leaving:

Obviously nothing if your vehicle isn't involved. But once bitten, twice shy, I always say.....

Bummer dude. I had the opposite experience. Took my 01 Accord in at 104,950 and they swapped in a rebuilt trans for free, even though it wasn't showing any signs. Car has about 190k on it now and it has only been in the dealership once, and that trip was free.

And even more amazing than that, I took my 91 NSX in with a service bulletin for the snap ring issue and they gave me a $2200 part for free. On a 17 year old car. And they gave me a TL loaner for a week while they shipped the part in from Japan.
