I currently work as programmer on a large ERP application for a public university. A big oil company is implementing this same software. An ex co-worker already jumped ship to work on the same application, but a different module. He's been keeping me up to date on things. I got a call today from one of their recruiters to setup a phone screening interview tomorrow morning.
Current Job
Sr. level/Team Lead
VERRRRRRY laid back. People come and go as they please (which pisses me off)
22 hours of PTO a month
Don't have to carry a phone or be on call
6 years of service
State funded university (great job security)
I can surf the Internet all I want
Potential Job
Major oil company (a lot more risk. They took a big hit last year, but have made a nice recovery.)
Probably 2 weeks vacation
Carry a Blackberry
No Internet access (It's locked down tight)
Rated one of the top places to work in the nation (multiple restaurants, basketball courts, world-class gym, swimming pool, blah blah blah. Very Google like.)
Give performance based raises every 6 months.
Just for kicks let's say I make $80,000 currently. What is the least amount of money you'd need to accept this position?

If it is Halliburton or Schlumberger PM me, I'll give you some insight on the company. Hell, I may be able to give you insight on any of the "big" oil services companies.

15% is usually enough to make me consider changing jobs, if the benefit's are on par and no move is involved.

I don't know first hand on them, but Chesapeake is very good to work for from what I've been told.
I would definately negotiate more PTO than 2 weeks. Most companies will give more.

You may want to check it out. I forsee in the future some down turn in the funding of universities, and it may not be as stable as you hoped.

When I was making $30K right out of college, I thought $80K was a lot. Now that I make around $80K, it's not as much as I had thought.

$80k isn't bad in Oklahoma.
I'd probably make a move like that for $100-110k.
The ability to play on the internet really shouldn't be how you judge a job.
Job security, loss of vacation and having to be on call would be the things that use to evaluate the move.

I agree. The Internet thing isn't a big deal, but it does show the difference in work place environment. Chesapeake is a serious business out to make money...no question. Where I work now it's about spending the budget. Things will get done when they get done. It's a night and day difference.
are you a slacker or a go getter

In my mind, $100K is the number that would be hard to turn down. I wanted to make 6 figures by the time I was 30. I'm currently 31, so it would be close.
My buddy was making $52K at my current place. They hired him on at $80K with a signing bonus. He also hired in as a level one.

I'm 100% a go getter. That's what drives me crazy about my current place. People show up at noon and nobody says a word to them. Half of the staff is beyond half-assed. I tell people all the time they couldn't get fired if they tried.
One factor for me is I know I'll never be happy as an employee. My ultimate dream is to own my own business. At my current place I have a ton of time and flexibility to get something going. If I jump ship, I'll be able to generate more income which will help fund said business.
It'll be a tough decision IF an offer is made...

Asking is free. :hurray:
Figured those odds were about 1 in 10,000. So if I ask every day for the next 27.39 years I'm likely to get one "yes".

Negotiate yourself more PTO or vacation. That is always negotiable. I think $105-110K is what you need to aim for in your negotiations. Just tell them that you currently get X number of weeks (be honest) but count all your down time and off work time and tell them you'll settle for 3 weeks.
Plus get yourself an laptop and Air Card! :yesnod: I work in a locked down environment, it sucks. :yesnod:

130K, 4 weeks vacation and 20% bonus plan. And even if they offered it, the way you describe it, I'd probably still not take it. In fact, I think if you really, really look at what you are asking, you already know your answer.

I had the phone screening with the IT recruiter from HR today. It was pretty basic. She said my application had already been flagged as a canidate by the hiring manger, so this phone screening was pretty informal.
She did mention at the end "Do you need $100K base salary or would you consider $90K - $95K?" I told her about my PTO, benefits, etc... and said I'm willing to negotitage my base salary after all the benefits/PTO are compared. She mentioned how they have 6 month preformance reviews, bonuses, great benefits, 15% matching for 401K, etc...
We'll see what happens.

You are at a prime age to change jobs and move up in your career. I'd jump at that opportunity, they don't come along as often as you think.
That said, no matter how much money you make, it's never really enough. You'll find that you quickly adjust to the new amount, but that new job sounds like it has great benefits which is worth a lot. Good luck!

$10/hr plus guarenteed full time hours and allow me to take 30 minute lunches instead of an hour so I can get paid for the other 30 minutes. I also want a 10 minute window for being tardy instead of 5 and allow 5 tardies every 3/mo instead of 6/mo. These would be my demands. But between you and I if push comes to shove, I would take $9.50/hr.

Hey, I remember the first job I had that paid $10/hr. It was in 1986 and I thought I'd hit a gold mine. It was at Motorola. After I was there a whole six weeks the the plant laid off 1/3 of the workforce, including all new hires (me...) A year later they were closed down. It was a real shame, it was a great facility with a big airy cafeteria/lounge with quality food, TV's, couches, stuff like that.

All other things being equal, more money is always better for sure!
I've found that all other things are never equal, though. :)
OP...only you know what you value most about your day to day work. If you like laid back and surfing and more time off, the monetary increase of going to the new job might not make you enough "more happy" to offset what you give up.
But again, only you know what makes you "more happy!"
