SPOKANE, WA (KTRK) --
A prominent civil rights activist has been accused of falsely portraying herself as African-American by her own family.

Rachel Dolezal, the president of the NAACP chapter in Spokane, is accused of falsely identifying herself as black on a city application to serve on a citizen police ombudsman commission

Public records, including Dolezal's birth certificate, list her biological parents as Ruthanne and Lawrence Dolezal of Montana. The Dolezals told ABC affiliate KXLY-TV Thursday that Rachel is their biological daughter and that they are both white. Photos of Dolezal as a teenager also appear to show her as white.

On the NAACP Spokane Facebook page, a picture was posted earlier this year showing Dolezal and an African-American man, who she identifies as her father in the post. When asked about the photo, she grew defensive and refused to answer.


"Ma'am, I was wondering if your dad really is an African-American man," KXLY reporter Jeff Humphrey asked.

"I don't know what you're implying. I don't understand the question," Dolezal answered.

"Are your parents white?" Humphrey then asks.

Dolezal then removes her microphone and walking away from the camera.

Dolezal's own family says she has misrepresented major portions of her life. They claim she's actually German and Czech. Her mother, Ruthanne Dolezal, says she has a simple message for her daughter: "Honesty is the best policy."

The City of Spokane is reportedly investigating the allegations and whether she violated the city's code of ethics in her application to serve on the citizen police ombudsman commission.

The Black community was really shocked to find out that the president of the NAACP’s Spokane chapter was pretending to be a Black woman. This information was new to us, but this was really nothing new for her family.

Despite what Rachel’s done during her tenure at the NAACP, and the lengths she’s gone to to make everyone believe that she’s a Black woman, Al told TMZ that her parents are really the only ones to blame for this mess.

He understands that much of their decision to reveal their daughter’s lie was due to a family dispute, but he’s still questioning why they chose to drop this bomb now after so many years. “You’ve got to ask, why would your mother and father after all this time come out [with this]. What is that all about?”

“Are you really going to do this to your kid? Are we really going to have this kind of dysfunctional family stuff play out ad distract us from real civil rights causes,” Sharpton continued. “And you’ve got to ask the question: What is mom and dad’s motive here?”

There’s still plenty of blame left to go around, though. He argues that Rachel wouldn’t even be in this position, had she just been honest about the fact that she’s White. It’s not a huge deal to him that she’s not Black.

“It’s not about her race. There are Whites in all of our, and there are Whites that died in the civil rights movement,” said Sharpton. “I think the question they want to deal with is her honesty. You have to be transparent.”

Sharpton encouraged her to embrace her true identity in her fight for equality, stating, “If you’re fighting for the rights of people, then don’t deny the person that you are.”

Having come from up north I can see that with the larger companies and .gov jobs. Being down in the south though I have a different view.

Im looking to make a move now from my employer and as a result I've changed my FB profile pic so that it's not (can't see race) me and I opt out of the race disclosure too because being in the south I think some people are still a bit prejudice. Being in sales I think a lot of people are Leary of having a minority regardless of qualifications be the face of their company to their customer base.. Rachel Dolezal sued Howard University for discrimination

Rachel Dolezal, the former president of Spokane, Washington’s NAACP who resigned Monday amid controversy over her racial heritage, unsuccessfully sued Howard University in 2002 for discriminating against her because of her race.

Dolezal’s lawsuit against Howard, a historically black university, alleged that the university denied her a teaching assistant job, further employment and a scholarship because she was white. The lawsuit also claimed that Professor Alfred Smith, chair of the Art Department, specifically kept Dolezal from serving as a teaching assistant one semester and removed some of her artwork from a student exhibition because of racial prejudice.

Howard University is “permeated with discriminatory intimidation, ridicule, and insult,” lawyers for Dolezal, who then went by Rachel Moore, alleged.

Ultimately, Washington D.C.’s court of appeals affirmed a lower court decision finding that the actions taken against Dolezal were not racially motivated. The case was dismissed and she was ordered to reimburse more than $2,700 in costs incurred by the university, as well as an additional $1,000 for an “obstructive and vexatious” filing attempting to delay her medical exam.

The lawsuit was first reported by The Smoking Gun blog.

Dolezal resigned from her position leading Spokane’s NAACP Monday following her parents public statements last week that she is a white woman posing as an African-American.

In her application to become chairwoman of Spokane’s city government’s Office of the Police Ombudsman Commission, Dolezal listed her racial background as white, black, and American Indian, leading to allegations that she may have violated the law by misrepresenting herself.

Rachel Dolezal accused her ex-husband of forcing her to take part in a homemade sex tape, Daily Mail Online can reveal.
Dolezal, 37, admitted participating in 'sexual acts' on camera with ex Kevin Moore, pictured here in these exclusive photos for the first time since their wedding picture appeared.
However, the serial litigant who resigned her post as leader of the Spokane, Washington chapter of the NAACP Monday, insisted she took part against her will.
The lurid claim was one of a raft of damaging accusations she leveled at Moore, 37, in a bid to deny him access to their young son Franklin. Moore denied the claims of abuse.
Montana-born Dolezal married the African American physical therapist in March 2000 but their marriage ended five years later in a bitter court battle.
