During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.
Even if he is able to contact NASA a return mission would take 4 years, and Damon has only a 31-day supply of food and water, so he has to improvise. Perhaps the best line of the movie: “So, in the face of overwhelming odds, I’m left with only one option: I’m going to have to science the shit out of this.”

I read this book when it first hit Amazon a few years ago and loved it. Can't wait to go see it. The movie looks good.

I understand that the scenery is magnificent and completely like the violent weather on Mars.

If they do it right, it has the chance to be very good. The story is great, and the science behind the stuff Watney does to survive is quite plausible. The book had a lot of humor in it too. You see a little of it in the trailer: "I'm going to science the shit out of this" and "In your face, Neil Armstrong" pretty sure those are the quotes from the book.

Why yes, Matt Damon did play a stranded astronaut in Interstellar.
The first official trailer for the film looks like it's going to blow "Interstellar" and "Gravity" out of the water, according to the reviews.
But there's going to be a huge difference between the two sci-fi movies: "The Martian" is going to be heavy on the science fact, and light on the science fiction.
The story doesn't read as one random disaster after another though. Watney relies on his science background to tackle each problem of being a lone, stranded human on an inhospitable planet — securing food, oxygen, and transportation.
NASA is even involved in the film. Their experts have consulted on the movie, and NASA also gave permission for the film to use the copyrighted NASA logo on its costumes.

Eggs zactly.
When I read the book, at first I was waiting for the inevitable "Why is this person being mean for no reason? Why is that thing going wrong when it's extremely unlikely?" Instead it was just a good solid science-based plot with humor and tension and great ideas. I just loved it. When I heard it was going to be made into a movie, hope was held out. This looks good. Really good.
