View Full Version : [yt] Friends... without the laugh track
Weird how there are comedies on TV now that are hilarious without a laugh track.
I always remember Friends being hilarious, but when you remove the laugh track, it just gets... awkward and not at all funny. :leaving:
YouTube - Friends - Ross Is A Pedophile - No Laughtrack/Laughter
I guess laugh tracks really are used to compensate for less creative writing.

All parties involved... script writers, actors, directors, producers, etc. knew the laugh track was there. They were using it as a comedic device and playing around that. The timing, in particular, is affected by the presence of a laugh track... and timing is key to the success of any joke.
I'm not saying that laugh tracks should be in sit-coms. I detest them. They are singularly the reason I haven't watched any of them in about 20 years.
In this case, however, when it's intentionally removed, it disrupts the rhythm of the performance. To say that this clip is not funny just because an intended device is no longer there is, IMHO, unfair.
Not to mention, it's an awkward topic to begin with.

I'm sure it was no accident that they planned the entire show's worth of teh funnah around the absence of the soundtrack.
As a side note... I wonder if someone added a laugh track to the show you mentioned above, if it would add to, or subtract from, the funnay. Mind you... don't bother to reshoot any scenes, then reproduce the show with a laugh track... just go on and shove one in there with an overdub.
I'm guessing it would no longer be funny. But that wouldn't prove anything either, IMHO.

Well, then there's that, too.
I have the entire Mash series on dvd and the best feature is that you can watch it without the laugh track. It's still funny.
