HOUSTON (KTRK) --
The man who pulled the trigger in a controversial dog park shooting in January was no-billed this afternoon by a grand jury.

Joseph Potts was charged with animal cruelty for shooting a dog at the Bay Area dog park in Pasadena. Potts, who has a concealed handgun license, told deputies the animal threatened his wife and his own dog.

The dog named Diesel was shot three times. His owners put him down a few hours later.

Five independent witnesses that were there that day all said Diesel was NOT aggressive. WTF?

It's a sad day for dogs, and a sad day for CCW.

I don't like vicious dogs. But I aimed to miss and scare them off.

This guy, a CCW permit holder, shot the dog in the leg, disabling it, THEN pumped a couple more shots, center mass, to make sure he did the job. All of this in front of families with kids. I've been to that dog park before. Glad I wasn't there that day.

There are any number of Pitbull or other dog lovers who would say the dog was not aggressive, regardless of circumstance. There is no way I would let ANY Pitbull or other menacing dog within reach of me or my wife, unless it was obviously friendly. Any signs of aggression would met with deadly force.

just walking down to the barn 20 min ago, i spy 3 loose dogs, and then a very worried bunny screams past me.

my hand is on my gun, still in my holster, as i tell the dogs to go home. they did not make any moves in my direction, so the gun stayed in my holster.

they may be your darling pets, and wouldn't hurt a fly (although they were chasing a rabbit, not a milk bone), but i don't know that.

fence them up, keep them on a leash, keep them on YOUR property. :issues:

Shot in cold blood. In broad daylight.

Right in front of its owner. And his wife.

I would never to a dog to a dog park. It is a recipe for disaster.

You probably should never go to a dog park, then. I've been to several, including the one in question. They are full of dogs whose people treat them like members of the family. They are socialized, and NOT threats.

Now, if you were in the ghetto somewhere, and encounter a dog dragging a few feet of logging chain locked around his neck with a padlock, then yeah, you might be on guard, knowing that the dog was probably treated like shit, not socialized, and is probably dangerous.

In this case, the shooter was a veteran, and people were speculating that the grand jury gave him a pass because of PTSD, not wanting to ruin the life of someone who served their country.

I would never go to any dog park, regardless. I am only adressing my personal situation. Walking around my neighborhood, there are a couple Pits and Mastiffs, and another breed(whose name escapes me). Normally, they are being walked by their owners. But I have seen some dogs running loose, rarely. I always carry, and hand is on the weapon anytime I spot a big dog.

:cert:

Things are a little different at a dog park. At a dog park, you can expect dogs to walk up and slobber on you, for example. You can expect to be sniffed. If it's wet, you can expect dogs to run right by you and splash mud on you. You can expect some barking and posturing between dogs, too (usually the little dogs, surprisingly enough). The whole point is, they get to run loose, and the visit is about them, not about the owners, although, they are fun for the owners, too.

I love dogs. And dogs love me. Everywhere I go, I am confronted by smiling dogs. If I had the property and the recourses...I'd have 10 of them myself.

If I had to do life over...I'd get educated and become a professional trainer. No show stuff. Obedience, Hunting, retrieving, field trails. :seasix:

I'd buy a big piece of property and build a professional kennel.

I am dead serious. Screw this construction BS. I'd be a dog man. :cert:
