She was in a walmart parking lot exiting out the main street. Lady turned right, veered into her lane and got her driver side. 2000 Jeep Cherokee with 140k on it...was a decent vehicle...now is totalled. Thankfully she's all right...she had whiplash but that'll heal.

Of course I didn't have GAP on it to cover the difference in the loan. There's a 5500 note on it (mainly to help build her credit) and they insurance company wants to pay out 3700. We countered at 4300 just for giggles...as I heard they have minor leeway.

I'm left with the option of buying it back for $500 or letting it go. It would probably take a solid 3k to fix it...the fender is toast, as is the tire and I'm sure a bit of the frame needs straightening. I'm wondering if I can get more than $500 just taking it to a junk yard for parts.

Just to round out that shittiness... Wife's wrangler threw a connecting rod over the weekend. Engine is toast...so reman engine, plus installation...another 5k out the door. Sheesh...its got to start looking up.

Nope. Nope. Nope. Nobody wants to buy a car with a salvage title.

:iagree:

Take the money and learn the lesson on GAP.

I want to know why you are so far upside down on a used car in the first place. Did you severely overpay, or did your daughter pack on a bunch of miles in a short amount of time?

Weigh the difference between repair and replacement. Act accordingly.

My opinion? Continue payments. Try to keep Jeep in possession, to protect the title. Frame straightening is as common as dirt. The junkyard can supply the needed bits and pieces. GC is a very common vehicle, ergo, most sheetmetal should be available in the right color.

Good to hear your daughter is OK.

If it's a Cherokee ( not a Grand Cherokee ) it's unibody construction. Also at 140K, it's only about 1/2 dead. Those inline 6's last forever :yesnod:

If you decide to keep it, check out Jeep Forum for parts. If it is a Cherokee, it's called a "XJ" on the forum.

won't the motor in the wreck fit into the wife's ride? Anything will go into anything with a big enough hammer. :D

Nope. Nope. Nope. Nobody wants to buy a car with a salvage title.

Plus do you want to go through the hassle of fixing it versus spending a little more and buying something else.

I agree 100% with this, the only way I would consider keeping the car is if they give you a check and you keep the car with original title, not buy it back. In my half-assed opinion however, I doubt it is worth it to the OP to dick with the wreck. Just be glad your daughter is okay.

Wrangler used a 4.0 or 4.2 I6...wranglers picked from the same engine pool except for the shitty I4 models...

If both are I6...the long block should swap.

Also...5K for a wrangler engine...jesus.

Guy I got my 94 Sierra from had a receipt for a Crate 350...reman block, new crank, heads, pistons, rods, oil pump...they installed ALL new sensors, radiator, WP, belt, and did install...with a warranty..for like 3800...lol

Which means that every buyer is going to see the salvage title and move on to the next. I bought a Grand Cherokee recently. When I was searching, it wasn't uncommon to see 5 new cars with clean titles show up on craigslist on any given day.
Someone else suggested swapping the engine into the Wrangler. If it'll fit, that would make buying the car back for 500 bucks worth it.

Happy to hear your daughter is alright.

+1 for glad your daughter is ok. The vehicle, meh, scrap it and get something else. Unless, you plan to keep that thing forrrrrever.

Buy it back. Put the engine from the Cherokee into the Wrangler (assuming both are the inline 6). Save whatever common components you want, then part out the Cherokee. With it being unibody (no frame), straightening it will be a PITA. But those parts will go quickly on a Jeep related form like Wrangler (or Cherokee) forum, JeepForum, or NAXJA (Cherokee-specific forum).

Now if you want to buy it back and make an offroad rig with it, go for it. This could be an opportunity to work with your daughter and have her help in the rebuild/upgrade as needed. She may never have a need for all of it, but it'd be great bonding time and she'd learn a lot.

VERY happy she's okay. Hate to see our lil'uns get hurt like that. In the end though, I am sure it'll make her an even better/aware driver, even if it wasn't her fault at all.

Glad to hear she wasn't badly hurt, but sorry her car got totaled. Good luck with whatever decision you make on the car. :seasix:

Hey, better idea here.

Glad she seems ok.... but your story of two vehicles at once mirrors the loss of wife's much loved '99 Escort, the only new car she ever bought....some bastard hit her at 45 mph with an old LTD cop car complete with crash bars on front....

then her son almost got killed by some illegal running a stop sign at speed....left front wheel, and into a tree, killed the pickup....
