Everybody knows that when George Lucas made Star Wars, he was trying to recapture the magic and the fun of Flash Gordon serials of the 1940's. Turns out that wasn't the only part of 1940's cinema-going he wanted to revisit, he wanted to bring back the short film, and for the release of The Empire Strikes Back he wanted a short to be shown before the feature.
