Woman Selling Bakery for $75, an Essay, and a Cupcake Recipe
WAITSFIELD, Vt. — May 11, 2015, 10:34 AM ET
A Vermont bakery owner is selling her business — for $75 and an essay.
Vermont Public Radio reports that those interested in owning the Mix Cupcakerie and Kitchen in Waitsfield have to write about why they want it. They have to submit the essay along with an idea for a cupcake recipe and $75 entry fee.
Carole Keleher says she has to leave soon because her partner got a job out of state. She's also raising money online to cover equipment costs.
Keleher says she's offering 80 hours of free training to the prospective business owner.
So she wants someone to give her $75, a business plan, and a recipe....Just to be eligible to purchase her bakery?
Sounds like she is compiling data for her business plan, capital for a down payment, and recipes for her next business venture.
Smart woman, but how many people are going to bite that hook?

Maybe Red could buy it so he can refuse to bake cupcakes for gay people.:hide:

The article is lacking in detail, but I assumed that it was to be another "buy an entry for a chance to win XXXXXXXX" raffle. She sells enough entries (read: raffle tickets) at $ 75 a pop to collect what the business is worth, then she doesn't have to go through the hassle of selling it conventionally. The "write an essay" part would just be a gimmick to promote the raffle.

Which would be illegal in some states, but probably not in Vermont, which is very Libertarian. In California, where I live, I'm pretty sure you have to be a non-profit organization to hold a raffle, and even that was illegal until recently.
If it's legal, I say good for her, smart idea. She is taking the risk that the amount she collects in entries will not equal the worth of the business.
I also think the cupcake fad is pretty much played out.

Yeah....article is lacking. But I still think what I said in my previous post still applies. She might have a great gimmick, even if it is a raffle, she is collecting the necessary data for her next venture
