PHOENIX (Reuters) - A 29-year-old Nevada man accidentally fell about 400 feet (120 meters) to his death while visiting the South Rim at Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, a park official said on Friday.

Juan Carreras-Soto, of Las Vegas, was on a visit with his family on Thursday when he was reported to have tumbled off the edge of a rim trail east of Mather Point, said park spokeswoman Kirby-Lynn Shedlowski.

His body was recovered on Friday by a park helicopter.

Park officials were notified of the incident late on Thursday afternoon, but suspended any recovery operations until the next morning because of the rugged terrain, the time of day and over safety concerns.

The National Park Service and the Coconino Medical Examiner are investigating the death, but officials said it has initially been ruled accidental.

This is the second confirmed fatality at the sprawling park this year. In February, a 73-year-old man from New London, Minnesota, went into cardiac arrest and died while on a day hike.

The crimson-hued canyon ranks as one of the world's most popular outdoor tourist venues, attracting more than 4.7 million visitors in 2014.

The wife and I have been to the Grand Canyon. Ya gots tah know that crumbly edge and/or no fence is a warning. Hell, I've even seen people climb over the fence for a better picture. :spdchk:

Probably just wanted to climb over the railing for a better picture.

That's the problem in this country.... railings. Other countries just say "it's a long friggin' way down, so don't be stupid" while we try to protect Darwin award candidates from themselves.

Shielding the public from their own stupidity is a full time job....that's
why government has grown so much...

I don't know why they are so worried about the "fall". Hell, the fall never hurt anyone. It's that sudden stop at the end that's a bitch!

The man died. I really don't see how it could be any worse.

Little over a decade ago, wife/I flipped out to see my sis in Santa Fe....rented a car and drove to GC, south rim and my son met us there in that region....so he laid on the ground and looked over the edge, too windy to stand there....so I asked how far down, he said 2500' to the first rocks, about 3000' to the bottom....ooppppse!!!! He been climbing all over the Rockies/Sierras so he knew what he looking at.... I could not get within 15' of the edge, no way in HELL thought of taking a helicopter tour over the place, but the ~400 bux fare was a tad too much for us.....but I say this, it was a VERY interesting tour, saw all the sites, bought mucho Native arts/crafts......saw Painted Desert, Meteor Crater, Petrified Forest, it was a GRAND trip, best vacation of my life....well except seeing my Grandson/first grandchild....:seasix::hurray:
