My wife is Vietnamese. When we met I wasn't necessary looking for a Asian girl. A friend of mine who was dating a Vietnamese girl introduced me to her friend and we seem to hit it off. Been married to her for 20 years now.:cert:

I don't think it's about someone from one country is better than another, it has more to do with finding a spouse that values the institution of marriage. I will get flamed for this, but the womens' lib movement, in addition to the welfare state, were large causes of the erosion of family values, specifically, keeping the commitment to marriage.

It's so easy to just say, "I'm not happy, I'm out of here," and poof, the marriage is over, kids or not. I do know several men who married foreign brides who have subsequently been divorced, but I think the reason American men seek out these foreign brides is they hope to increase the likelihood that they will have a lasting marriage by marrying women who hold more traditional "'till death do you part" views of marriage. And yes, plenty of American marriages DO make it.





Full disclosure: I'm divorced, and both my ex and I came from two parent, married households. We didn't learn divorce as children, yet, we failed.

Just curious. Is it true that the ones who were culturally used to the idea of women being subservient to their husbands lose the subservient attitude soon after being wised up by American women, or other foreign- born wives who have been here for a long time?
I have seen some evidence of this, to the sorrow of the husbands who thought their wives would always be under their control.

By far the BIGGEST issue in our marriage is both of us trying to wear the pants. Far and above all other problems. She is not at all a subservient personality and strong women are a challenge and a force to be reckoned with. I am failing at it. I tell her that only one person can have the steering wheel and if both of us are trying to steer we are going to crash.

I don't think any other culture is as impacted by this as ours. Women in the US have become intimidated by being "women" and think they have to be another "man" to make it in the world.
