I noticed a loose piece of concrete on my front porch... so I started picking pieces off

Well first, clean up your mess. :D
Second, looks like a crappy patch job to begin with. The color difference with what is left gives it away. Get the right patching material and do the job right. Or you could just build a Wood Po'ch over it. I hear there is a thread on that around here somewhere. :datawiz:

yep; looks liek it was patched once before. Problem with those types of repairs is that they don't last long.
Here's what to do... let it sit and do nothing - until you decide to sell. Then do a similar patch job... and 3-5 years later someone else will have to re-do it.
jack hammer on your birthday list?

now what?
1. Rent concrete saw
2. Make straight even cut
3. Build form
4. Add steps in that location making the added portion the top step.
( I know nothing about concrete work, but this seems feasible. :D )
this is where I stopped
now what?
Keep going? :D
OP:
Next time you have a loose thread on your shirt.....don't pull it. Just don't.
I could fix it correctly for about $50.00 per sq ft.
