It's going on this week. I was there with my brother Monday.

I'm on the left with a beer at 9:00 AM.

We followed Rory McIlroy and his partner for the first few holes. Can't remember who he was playing with but he holed out for eagle from a layup shot on a par 5 (about 100 yards, plunk in the hole.)

It was good to sit in the stands at Amen Corner for awhile to rest our feet and watch the approach shots on 15 and the pros skipping balls across the pond on 16.

Hard to capture how beautiful the grounds were. We missed Tiger, he didn't come out until after we left.

We got there about 8:30, had to drive from Atlanta that morning (2+ hours), pick up my pass, and walk for awhile and go through security, then stand in line at one of the concession stands. Thought we did pretty good actually. :D

I'd love to find a place to stay for a few days closer to Augusta that didn't totally suck and had at least a few places to eat/drink at, if anybody knows of anyplace like that...

Apparently Augusta is in the middle of nowhere, and there isn't much else there other than Augusta National and a bunch of houses.

Every year I put my name in the lottery for tickets so I can take my Dad. Every year I get the denial letter.

Not sure I have another year with him.

The guys who instigated this whole thing have been putting their names in for the last 6 years and have gotten their passes every time. I have no idea how or why, but I had to buy mine online and it was *cough* not cheap.

Here's a link (https://tickets.masters.com/app/welcome) to where you can sign up for the ticket lottery, in case anyone cares.

Yeah, both my Dad and I have been entering every year for 10+ years.

If you don't play golf, I can certainly see why. I feel the same way about lots of other sports (NASCAR for instance.) But these guys are at such a higher level than the average hacker, it's just crazy. Some of the shots I saw Monday were simply mind boggling. And Augusta National looks totally different from what you see on TV, I barely recognized the holes. The course is a lot more wide open than it looks on TV too. The only place you're going to lose a ball is in the azalea bushes or the water. The trees are sparse and all pine needles on the ground, your ball would be fine there most of the time (well, at least you could find it and hit it.) The greens are simply evil, I can't imagine what the average member does around the greens, probably they just make a 3-putt max rule.

Oh, and the rough there is nothing. Maybe 3/4" tall, on the courses I play a ball in the rough like that would be considered a great lie.

the average member can afford to buy a birdie, 'eh, pick it up, time to go count our money before it's dark'.... :faint:

This is the #7 green. We hung out there for about 45 minutes. Basically there was a place you could land your shot and get birdie, maybe. It was a landing area about 6' in diameter. Anything outside that circle would roll far, far away. Just incredibly horribly evil.

If you did something like that, you'd be escorted out so fast it would make your head spin. My brother didn't get any sleep the night before the tournament (something about Tinder something) and was dead on his feet all day Monday. At one point I told him to sit down on this hillside in the shade and I'll go get him a banana (and me some more beer) at the concession stand. He laid down for just a minute and fell asleep. Before I could get back (less than 8 minutes total) a security guy had woke him up and questioned him. Satisfied that he wasn't hammered, they told him that he a) couldn't sleep at the Masters and b) if they saw him laying down in any way, shape, or form again they would escort him off the premises. They do not mess around. The banana helped, he perked up a bit.

We walked the Shell Houston Open last weekend following Shawn Stefani, are you guys tracking how far you walk with a pedometer? We did 8.9miles.

The pictures look awesome, that is one course I'd really like to visit. :yesnod:

We walked at least 5 miles. I know what it feels like when I walk 18 holes. We walked about the equivalent of 27 holes. And that course is hilly, probably the biggest thing I noticed that you really don't get a feel for watching it on TV. It is a big deal for the players to walk instead of ride on a course like that, especially for the guys like Freddie Couples.

Is it true that once you leave the course you find yourself in a shithole? I've heard that the area surrounding the course is third world.

Thanks for the pics Brent! I'm only a weekend hack golfer at best but can appreciate the talent it takes to be consistently good.

Looks like a really nice course too.

I think that should be happening at more PGA tournaments. These guys who scream "Baba Booey" or "It's in the hole" at the tee box the second the player makes contact are a real bunch of douchebags. That said, Augusta takes it way too far. It's like you can't even scratch your arm without being pounced on by security.

Several years ago, my g/f had was invited to the Masters by a vendor. And I mean, an all-access pass with parties, limo rides...the whole schmear. She turned it down saying she wasn't interested in golf.

:skep:

You DO realize that you turned down the hardest ticket in sports, right? :willy:

More or less correct. I didn't drive around Augusta much, just enough to get off/on the highway, but it's like a gem in the middle of what could be any slightly run-down small town. I did see some nice houses there however.

Oh, if you go to www.masters.com you can watch the play at Amen Corner and holes 15 & 16, and the featured groups (which I think start a bit later than right now.) The pictures from the stands I took were at 15/16.

Well, there is Ft Gordon, home of the U.S. Army Cyber Center of Excellence, multiple Brigade and Battalion units (both Signal and Military Intelligence), and units from the Air Force, Navy and Marines.

I used to take a one-week leave at this time and rent out my house for sufficient money to pay my mortgage for five to six months while stationed there.:seasix:

Something else strange about this place. Whenever you see any of the patrons (that's what they call the paying customers) sitting in any sort of chair other than the stands, usually a collapsing green chair, they bought that chair at Augusta National either this week or a previous year. You cannot bring any other chair onto the course. It has to be a Masters chair. And you can set that chair wherever you want inside the roped-off seating zones and just leave it (or take it from place to place) and nobody will touch it because there are people watching everything. Your chair is inviolate.

Golf...never understood why you have to be quiet. Try hitting a baseball from 60 feet away coming at you 90+ miles per hour with a stadium full of screaming people.

When you're at the plate, you don't hear sh**.

If it was just a droning noise, you'd be fine. It's the quiet punctuated by a sudden sound that causes you to just slightly flinch, which is all it takes to turn a nice draw into a horrible duck hook.

Just now, Tiger tees off on the par 5 #15, hits his drive right into the trees, and says about as loud as possible "Tiger! You dumbass!"

Everybody kind of looks at their feet.
