We weren't quite that sophisticated, but we used to make something like that when I was a kid. We used the foil from gumstick wrappers. Much lighter than aluminum foil. We fashioned a launch ramp out of a paper clip.

And to think how this would play out working in an aluminum plant.

OP, I don't know why you're just learning about these, but I've been making them for lots of years. They are fun!

Good fun for sure. :seasix:

My brother and I used to do all kinds of crazy stuff with the old Estes kits and motors.

We spent some time trying to perfect a zip lock bag filled with a little gas and stuck in the body of the rocket.
Then we stuck a wood stick in the nose cone to hit on impact. Didn't work out quite as well as we hoped but was still fun. :Jeff '79:

I use to make those all the time as a kid. Learned a few other things and ways to make things go boom.

My Dad and Uncle taught me how to make Field expedient explosives.

It was great growing up with retired Marines.

Yes. My dad is a Marine war vet. Taught me about explosives and firearms. But also taught me respect and beat my ass when I was shooting birds for the F of it.

There are a lot of those projects on the cheap on that guy's website....
Fun to make and cheap to build. I like the air, water or vacuum pump..

When I was a kid we made matchstick rockets, but ours were more like bottle rockets. We just wrapped aluminum foil around the head of the match and used a paper clip (or something similar) to form a channel between the foil and the matchstick.
When the match lit off the channel was the path of least resistance for the hot gasses, so they shot down, and propelled the whole thing upward, just like a bottle rocket.
I bet the design Dixie posted has better range, and accuracy than the ones that we made though.

Did you know that stick matches fit very nicely into a .177 air gun barrel?

We used to empty the gun powder out of firecrackers and load it into a small piece of pipe. We would insert a sharpened no. 2 pencil in the end of the pipe and fire the pencils across the yard. :seasix:
