I thought I saw a few folks here who own properties.
I need to shed some light on an issue I'm having now. Met with my current landlord to try and extend my current place till September so that when I take my promotion then and relocate the company wont have to buy out a lease or deal with that hassle of relocating.
Well my landlord claims its too expensive to maintain the lawn and insure the house because it has a pool, so she is raising rent from 1600 to 1800. That makes no sense to me.
Any of you guys know what insurance might cost with a pool.
Now I get to find a house in the 6 weeks while graduating on May 3rd
Life is fun.

Unfortunately, it doesn't matter what her excuse is or how much insurance is, if your lease is up, she can raise the rent.

:island14: insurance with a pool as a rental house in Florida isn't cheap! My property taxes and insurance went up about $200 a month this year (although I switched insurance to lower that part) :island14: property values have been shooting up in Florida as I understand so why wouldn't rents go up? Are you seriously going to move over $200 a month for 6 months?

$200 a month for 6 months vs. moving. I'd probably pay the $200.

:iagree::iagree:
what excuse would you like to hear?
'son, rent is going up'
you can pay, or you can move.
:ironchef: won't get you much.

I moved out of a place because the land lady tried to up the rent 500 peso a month.. ($10 at the time)
I would have stayed if she had left the rent at $50 a month.. :Jeff '79:
Turned out to be a good thing though, I just didn't want to give in because I could not stand the woman, and ended up moving to our island instead of living in the city.

This could cost me 350 a month if I don't do the lawn care. Just doesn't make sense. Its purely a price increase because of an inflated market due to the seasonal trend we have

How much is a move going to cost you? First month plus safety deposit is probably $3000, plus moving cost. You're going to pay less than that in rent increase and mowing.

So why are you pissed at her? If she doesn't raise the rent to reflect current market rates, it's the same as if she started digging $200 per month out of her own pocket and giving it to you.
She took the risk of buying and managing an investment so she could get a return on her capital in the free enterprise real estate market. For all you know, she may be counting on the seasonal rates making her investment show a profit.
If anything, be pissed at the seasonal folks who are driving the rates in a direction you don't like.
I agree fully with Sea Six. My only suggestion to the OP is to try and negotiate a compromise. Offer to pay more, but not the full amount. How long will it take to re let the house? If the landlord loses one month (or more) of rental income, maybe it would make sense to agree to a compromise.
Here's the other thing. I thought the "busy season" in FL was during the Winter months. You are looking at signing a 6 month lease for the slowest 6 months of the year.

Its typical of a 500 deposit and only pay first month rent.
Cost of moving is just loading up my truck and moving it. So a tank of gas or two...
I've had to move so much in last 3 years, I can fit all my belongings in both of my cars for one trip, and then two trips for the couches and one for my bed.
I've probably mover every 6 months the last 3 years.
I'm just pissed that there really isn't a justification to raise it, atleast that is my feeling. I think she is doing it because she can not because she has too. I'm just wondering if I have anything to call her out on

10 points to Mr. Craft.
bingo.
surely, as you have picked up over time, our society is organized on the basis of making money. everywhere.
so unless you stumble across someone who does stuff just for the pleasure of it, every time you want/need something done for you, you will be peeling off bills from your roll.
if you get rich, and buy some rental properties, and want to pass out keys to them to whomever knocks on your door that day, knock yourself out. if you visit me, you'll be put up in our guesthouse and fed pretty well. gratis. other than that, bring some Benjamins.

Fek that!!!!..
... just take the time to move to something cheap for the time that it takes for your transfer.
$1600 is already way high, and why in the heck do you need a pool :island14:
A bunk to sleep in is all you really need. forget all the fancy stuffs till you are settled in and doing well.
Just my 2 centavo...

yup.
you'd be amazed how well you sleep having $$$ in the bank. i've lived in some pretty modest accommodations over time.
life style? my life style was to not care about what people thought about me and to watch out for my own account first. crappy car? it's paid for. small apt or house? easily afford them at 1/2 the pay. :DAB:

If I go back to the USA, and I am thinking about it myself to get ahead of money for a minute, just a corner of a barn, or a small loft room in a warehouse is all I need.
I have learned how to live cheap.. and would save a lot..
Money is just about quality of life, but/and some times ya just need to get by to save for the better times..

Nope. A lot of leases even allow them to raise rent during the lease, as long as there is a notification period.

I enjoy saving money. Which is why I'm pissed over a $200-$350, I just saved my self about that in gas by relocating to a different store when a equal position to mine opened up. I don't want to spend money that doesn't need to be spent.

Just come on. I got room for you guys. Bring Edison also. We need a yard boy.
i've only got a few days worth of work that needs to be done, so likely not worth swinging by just for that. :DAB:

Do they have someone ready to come in and pay the higher rate already. That is what sucks. If it sits empty for 2 months then they lost anything they would have gained raising the rent. I'm guessing they have had inquiries or they think they can rent it quickly. Tough call on what to do. I'd say just eat the extra $200 if you like where you are staying. However if you want to get out, downsize as others have said for the 6 months since you will be moving again anyways. Just put the stuff you have in storage or better yet sell it all and start fresh when you have the new position. Stay in one of those extended stay hotels that you pay by the week if the rates are lower. Save the money and use it for something nice down the road.

If your lease is up, you're free to move.
I think tenants should have more rights. :D
