View Full Version : One of my friends/customers upgraded his F150 to a Dmax

ugh...

Guy does lawncare, has been using an 05 F150 5.4Triton for a couple years, good clean truck, never any problems, but...11mpg on its best day, and struggles with 4000lbs on the trailer.

He was shopping 6.0 F250's....and I sugested he look at the 6.6 DMax 2500's...you know, good trucks.

He found an 87K mile 2500HD, 4X4, ran great, drove great, I think it it was 12,800...private seller, but it was dirty...it had been used more or less as a commuter/farm truck...and while it was mechanically great, it had dirt in the fenders, dirt and mud under it, underhood was not "polished" clean, but not oily at all...no body problems or paint problems.

Then he found a 125K mile 2005 2500HD, on consignment at a lot, said it had new injectors, 2WD, they wanted 15,900...he got it down to 14,800 and bought it...said it drive fine, good power.

So...200 mile trip bakc to town, he notices its hazing out the exhaust in traffic. He brings it by my house tonight and..its smoking pretty bad, not oil though, raw fuel. No missing..no power problems, smooth as glass. He revs it up and it lets out a plume of unburnt fuel. I can hear the turbo...no check engine light.

The exhaust smelled really really strongly of fuel though...it burned my eyes.

I hate it for him, it probably needs injectors, guy likely lied to him about it.

Should have bought the Ford :D

Sucks for your buddy. Given their tendency to eat them like candy and the associated cost/pain in the ass to repair, I would ask for a receipt and proof that 1 of those things really did have injectors and that the work was done by someone who actually knows what they're doing. No way I'm taking someone's word for it when they are selling.

Should have bought the Ford :D

6.0 Powerstroke? No fk'n way.

The only diesel from that era that I would ever buy would be the 5.9 Cummins.

If I was to need/want a heavy truck. I would give an honest look at all 3 builders. :seasix:

I know that Diesels are in demand an all, and realistically they can rack up the mileage, but...

I would never pay 15 grand for a 10 year old vehicle with 125k on it for daily use.

The 6.0L was absolute garbage. The new diesels are all about the same.

I dig the look of the F-superduty's. The new Dodge Ram is also nice. The new GM HD's are also nice looking. But I believe the Ford rules the HD's in styling. :island14:

I'm starting to see those new all-aluminum body Ford PU's, they look good but seriously what is that aluminum body going to wear like?

I learned the hard way you HAVE to perform an injector flow/balance test before purchasing a DMax

11mgp of gas is probably as cheap per mile as the diesel is going to be.

This is the thing no one seems to talk about. The diesel premium is ridiculous. I wouldn't recommend a diesel to anyone, unless they really had to have it.

:iagree:
No gas engine can compete with turbo diesels when it comes to really heavy loads and towing up mountains at higher altitude. But as an attempt to save money pulling a 4000 lbs trailer around town it will fail.

That's the exact reason I went gas over diesel for my one ton. I can live with being slower going up the hills VS the cost, stink, and maintenance of a diesel.

Over 150k+ miles with 4 trucks over 8 years with a lot of towing and a lot of daily use I can say without any hesitation whatsoever that the diesel trucks are almost identical cost per mile with everything, including maintenance included. If you want to go farther out with the comparison, resale is WAY better with the diesel trucks. You are losing way more value per mile with a gasser than you are the diesels.

I don't know what to tell you about "stink" unless you are talking a decade ago. I've never had any smell whatsoever out of either of my 2 LML GM trucks. You can wipe the inside of the exhaust with a white glove and it would come out clean.

I've owned both, I've towed with both, and I have put a hell of a lot of miles on both. There is absolutely no contest as far as I'm concerned. I don't see any reason that I would ever own a gas truck again.

...but as with everything, to each his own.

Actually I was talking about just the stink of diesel when refueling. Resale- Absolutely agree. But then as with my other trucks-I tend to keep them for a loooooooong time. Diesels don't like to sit without running for long periods and my trucks do.
Plus I don't like handling urine. That's something you new diesel owners get the joy of doing. At least if you get caught without water somewhere, you can drink it like Bear Grylls.

Urea is the active ingredient of Diesel Exhaust Fluid. Urea is created from synthetic ammonia and carbon dioxide when subjected to high heat and pressure and can be produced as a liquid or solid.

My Dodge doesn't have that. :bill_daniels:

The emissions mess that Dodge put on the 6.7 actually makes a tank full of piss look pretty good. :ack:

I know folks that have tuners and have all that crap removed., and their power and performance output is a night and day difference, even on the "stock" mode. I had considered doing that, but was afraid my "transmission crapped out" potential warranty claim would be denied. I'll may rethink that when I roll over 100k.

Damn, just the weight savings from having that stuff removed ought to increase mileage and performance.

I towed 120 miles with my diesel today, the season finally kicked in...super busy. The diesel truck (1995) has sat 99.9% of the past 4 months, i put maybe 20 miles on it. Checked oil, water, fluids this morning..she fired on the first turn of the key...not a hiccup all day. I put 30.00 worth of fresh diesel in her to top get it up over 3/4 tank, and a slurp of diesel kleen. No smell....at least, less than a gasser, and i NEVER handled urine, other than my own. By my calculations im averaging 16.5mpg. My tip isnt spotless, but..im straight piped turbo back with a tune, but i dont get smoke.

Good luck finding it now.

The EPA cracked down on all of the tuners. Removing all of the emissions crap from a 6.7 used to be relatively cheap. All of a sudden it costs a fortune. A friend had a 6.7 and kept looking at doing it. Now he has a 5.9. :)
