You only need 39 digits of pi to accurately calculate the spherical volume of the universe.

How do you know it's a sphere? :D

How do you know it's a sphere? :D

Doesn't matter. The spherical volume of the observable universe is a thing that can be adequately quantified using 39 digits of pi, to the accuracy known. All the rest are a waste.

Observable is a big word here. :shots:

Even if you assume the observable is less than 1% of the total (about what is currently conjectured) it would still be good within the size of a volume smaller than the orbital of a sodium atom.

From the comments

Civil Engineer- 2 significant digits

Mechanical Engineer- 3 significant digits

Aerospace Engineer- 4 significant digits

Materials Science Engineer- 5 significant digits

Physicists- 39 significant digits

Social Scientist- what's a significant digit? That sounds like a penis. It must be a White Patriarchal conspiracy. Let's divert funds from your silly science and study how people feel.

For all practical purposes, using the square root of 10 suffices to any matter of calculation you're going to run into, and 3.14 is positively overkill most of the time.

A famous mathematician said that 1 is a close enough approximation of pi for somewhat small circles. :D

I actually use it too.

10" pipe is 10-3/4" outside diameter. 10.75" x Pi = 33.77". Therefore, one pass around a 10" pipe is 33.77 inches of weld. A 10" pipe weld is 3-4 passes. That's 135" of weld. Or about 11'.

Every degree on the circumference is .0938 measured radially.

If a bolt pattern was drilled on the OD and had a tolerance of plus or minus1/2 a degree, it would have to be with .0469 for proper location. :D

No, that is a bolt circle on a face.

Think weld fixture for welding titanium. :yesnod: Holes on the outer edge

Oh, the base of the natural log gets much respect and in fact shares a special partnership with pi. In fact, many mathematicians think this equation is one of the most beautifully simple yet powerful equations there is:

1 + e^i*pi = 0

In this you have five of the most fundamental math elements beautifully tied together.

1 (one is pretty singular)
e (base of the natural log)
i (sqrt of -1)
pi
0 (zero is essential I think)

So there you go!
