View Full Version : DST rant...

This is my semi-annual complaint about DST or, more precisely, time change in general, since that day occurs early tomorrow morning.
Folks, if you have a 24 foot piece of lumber, and you cut a foot off the top and nail it to the end of that board, do you have a longer board? NO! [Or as the joke goes, "Only White man believe that cutting off one end of blanket and sewing it onto other end make longer blanket," said the Indian Chief.]
Daylight Savings is what needs to be abolished as it no longer serves its purpose of saving electricity & providing more time for farmers to work their crops. Kids don't go out and play until dark - they sit inside in front of the computer or game console or TV, and most farm machinery has headlights now. So DST no longer serves any purpose except to rob us of an hour of sleep. We DO NOT gain any daylight except that which would occur naturally anyway due to the angle of the Earth towards the sun. A day is still just 24 hours, no matter what you do to your clocks.
And just as an aside, DST has nothing to do with farmers. Cattle live by the sun dial. They give milk in the morning and at night. They wake up when the sun comes up and laze around when it gets dark. And any time in between when they want to rest. DST as a Federal mandate with standardized start and stop points is relatively new. I think from the late 1960s as far as legalities go. And it was first instigated as a measure to save electricity in factories in WWI and II. Back in those days factories had huge movable glass windows and skylights so much of the workday was accomplished using the natural light of the sun. By manipulating the clocks it stayed light an hour longer than normal.
The thinking was people would rather work later than get up earlier to take advantage of the 'free' daylight at the end of the day. Trouble is, there isn't a factory built in the last 60 years that has natural lighting in it. At least not as part of its primary lighting. They are all sealed and use electric lighting and have to be air conditioned (which includes air exchanges so many times per hour). [The Nissan Assembly Plant 10 miles North of me is almost 1 mile in length and doesn't have a single window.] The later work day brought on by DST means most places that run one or two shifts actually use more electricity since the sun is still beating down on their buildings for an hour after it would normally do so according to the clock. DST is really for the softball and golf crowd...you know who you are.
Most of all I'm against time changes because whenever my wife asks me what time it is right after the change, she follows up with, "No...what time is it really?". No shit.

I'm retired so I go by my sleep and wake up biological atomic farting clock. :D
if you have a 24 foot piece of wood, it's going to be hell to move it around and finish it. and if you chop off a foot from one end and try to attach it to the other end, the grain won't match and you'll have a weaker board too.
i get up and go to sleep when i want.

You tried to buy a 24' board lately? The longest board I've ever found was 18'.

I was fortunate enough to live in Indiana when we voted on what time it was.
lived on the Indiana/Illinois border.
it was an impressive aftermath, people complaining "it's more confusing now" after DST was adopted.
yes, it's more confusing now the Illinois is always and hour different, rather than an hour different only half the year.

Too much blood in your alcohol stream, eh?
Spence, I'm with you DLST is an anachronism. But more than that, it's just plain government backed evil. Think about it.....if your government can arbitrarily change what time it is, what else can it do? Truthspeak? We have always been at war with Eurasia? The cabbage rations have been lowered again?
We, the people, need a leader, to step forward, and challenge this madness. I'm nominating you to lead the class action suit against the government, henceforth known as "the truth in time" action, and I am volunteering to be the lead plaintiff in such action.
Now, who else is with us?
Now, who else is with us?
Not me, I'm thankful big brother has given us this extra hour of daylight :D

How 'bout we keep daylight saving time and dump standard time. In the winter is when you really need another hour of daylight in the evening.

Either way is fine with me, just so long as we keep it the same year round.

You sleep when you are tired, you are awake when you are not.
You eat when you are hungry, not because it is time to do so.
But who am I to give opinions.. :island14:

To ME, it always thought the silliness was backwards.....winter is still dark in AM going to school, and school ran from 9-330 all my screwal years....
so who cares in the AM if it's dark, in the warmer evening hours it much nicer to have sunlight......
or just split the diff, and hell with it all, such silliness.....

Case Closed!
Pure idiocy.
Leave the clocks alone and just everyone agree to do everything an hour earlier. Same f'n thing.
Store opens at 9? Open at 8
Dinner at 6? Nope 5 now
The 11:00 news is now the 10:00 news.
That's ALL daylight savings time actually is!

Design digital clocks that call noon when the sun is directly overhead, with the other hours arranged around that. Allow for the number of minutes per day to be adjusted for the true length of the year.

Sure! Why not?
I'm sure nothing bad or confusing could possibly come from that.

Timbers I can get to 32 foot. Poles 40+.
Dimensional lumber I can get to 24 foot.
In Y-Pine or Bald Cypress.
Hardwoods are more difficult in longer lengths. I currently have a buy now placed at two yards for 24 foot old growth oak 8x12's. I'll get them, it just takes a while and is costly.
Mill size. And kiln size are a couple of the limiting factors.

I was surprised to find out that there are more than 70 countries that use DST, but at different times.
