Appliances we are going with can be found here.. http://www.thevettebarn.com/forums/off-topic/5231-best-pricing-kitchen-appliances.html

Tile is tomorrow and cabinet install and granite template is Friday. Saturday the tile guy comes back for the backsplash. Monday is paint and Tuesday is lighting, the plasma, and finishing touches.

More pics to come..

Went through a kitchen remodel a few years back, just finished a master bath.

Both, a PIA and very pricey but worth it.

You going to scrape that kitchen ceiling texture off?

Want to but its not worth it. I have 3300 sq/ft with it and I am not going to pay to have it all removed and it doesn't make sense to remove it in just the one room.

He's great. He's resided my house, did my deck, he does my flips....

As a matter of fact he did the roof and demoed my latest investment prop yesterday. They were supposed to do ext paint today but the snow is pushing that out a day or so now.

I had troubles finding any cabinets that were not full of MDF/fiberboard somewhere in the construction.....so made my own cabinets twice for the last two houses....tops also....formica, not going any stone money....

I presume from the pix that you are leaving the floor plan/layout....tough to get new boxes to match the existing flooring....

I tiled the entire kitchen, then did the boxes here.....up north it was just a vinyl floor....

so how many dinners out does the wife get outta this job???

Layout is staying the same although we are going 8 inches further down the back wall and 10 inches out on the end of the L because we are adding a cook book shelf. All the wood is ripped up and fiber board is down now as we are tiling it all. Cabinets are all custom because suprisingly it was cheaper. We are also doing granite..the area where the sink is will be two levels with a raised bar on the back side. Where the exposed wallpaper is we are putting a plasma. Its going to have new lighting too all throughout..

...Whitepower...
02-10-2011, 11:12am
Forgot to add.. the tile will have a mat pattern in the center of the cooking area. The tile is also extending into the mud room and down a small hall and into the half bath. The cabinet maker is making a new vanity for in there as well. It will have a granite sink top.

GOOD, custom boxes, not store bought, should be a great job then....about the only way you can get quality any more.....

you mention fiberboard under the tile.....so that's on a frame/joist floor, right?? so I would hope there is a layer of hardibacker between any fiberboard and the tile.....I would use plywood anyway....

only damn use I ever seen for fiberboard, is MDF used for formica top backing....other than that, I hate that shit....

Did the same thing 18 months ago. Turned out great, very happy we did it. I used a bunch of the old cabinets out in the garage, and moved my old kitchen fridge out there. Nice to have a full-size garage fridge. Even had the ice make hooked up out there, makes it easy to fill coolers up when I golf.

we're getting ready to redo the guesthouse, including the kitchen, nothing fancy or expensive planned. so far, have just done quick looks at HD and lowes. i don't have the time or space presently to make them (shop won't be up and running until spring) like i plan to do for the main house kitchen next year.

Third floor the kitchen is seeing since it was built. The plywood has some light damage. This is the easiest way to level it out for tile install.

Custom boxes worth every penny. But you do pay for quaility.

the flat packed stuff is garbage from my experience.

Medallion makes a quality all wood cabinet with dovetail joinery and choice of wood species. There are others. I have a friend who I buy from that carries the Medallion lines. I am a fanatical perfectionist...and I used Medallion in my last home...I will use them again.

the idea that only custom "shop built" cabinets are of quality is not true. In fact, most shop built cabinets can not compare with the finish applied on a factory "box" cabinet.

are there junk box cabs...absolutely. There are also a lot of garbage shop built cabinets. Yes, many (most) shops have mastered the art of cabinet door shaping and cabinet joinery...but not many shops have the facilities to apply an outstanding finish.

Lars, I dunno man, I seen some fancy box shops do a unconscionable rip off on cabinet sales....charging like 11 grand for some fancy drawer slides, and little else, thinner than 1/2 ply, MDF shelves, but they certainly LOOKED nice....

one box was so outta square from the factory, it could not retain a lower shelf in the box....so I had to custom cut one outta square it was that bad....

you maybe have your list of suppliers you like/trust....but it's a nasty mess out there.....They SELL one thing, and deliver something else....but by then, it's TDL, and the customer has to install them....then the lawyers get involved.....

I noted one thing this time round in the pix....and thought of a friend here who bought a realy sweet home at the rong time.....5 years ago, we redid his kitchen quite extensively....and all the trim in the house was that nice clear natural finished wood, like shown in the OP......

wooden you know it, his nitwit wife thought it looked so 'dated' that she insisted on painting ALL the trim, white, more 'modern' looking.....

I tried hard to talk her outta it, but no cure for stupidity.....maybe I just like my wood too much.....

Loving seeing the remodel! Looking good! :)

Just the light fixtures you've shown make a world of difference in the look of the kitchen/breakfast area!

Thank goodness we were not living here yet when we had the entire house painted, all new light fixtures put in, and all the countertops pulled in the kitchen and baths to put in granite. It was a HUGE mess all over. :willy:

Looks really nice so far. Great choices. We went with custom cherry in our kitchen too. Had a huge space not being used so we put in an island as well. Your floor/tile layout looks a lot like what we did back in 07 or so. I like the borders around the cabinets like that. All thats left is the wiring of the down draft and cook top, testing of the gas line, paint prep, paint, trim stain, and a few other minor things. Most of it should be done tomorrow but the painter needs to get the stain info from the cabinet maker for a few finishing pieces.

Wife actually painted over the wood in that pic and removed the lower rail. Its all light gray with white trim now.. We had two shades of wood in the kitchen with the dark cabinets and light trim which didn't look right. Its crazy how much brighter it is now. The vent rises up 14 inches (higher than must large pots so it still effective) and it moves 700 or 800 cfm if I recall correctly.

Haven't cooked in there yet as its not 100% complete.

If the microwave was on top of the oven it would have been even higher up than it is now which would work. As for the hood. My wife wanted a downdraft so that's what she got. Besides with the basment being unfinished it was the easiest thing to do versus tearing into walls and cutting through 20+ studs just to route the exhaust outside. Recirculation fans suck. That's what we had before. We wanted a true exhaust.

The highlight though is the under cabinet lighting in the kitchen.. Excuse the shitty ipod pic my wife took.. But you get the idea.. I just jacked the link off her fb page..

I can't help but comment on kitchen exhaust fans, keep in mind that air has to come from somewhere, and typically that is from inside the house , so the HVAC unit has to take up the slack, the best control for that is a 4" or maybe 6" vent to outside air, in the return stack of the air handler....so when the HVAC is running the house is actually under a mild + pressure, and the kitchen vent has a easy source of air to draw on, air handler running or not....
keeps all that outside air from being sucked into the interior...aids the flow rate on the kitchen exhaust.....same for bathroom fans too, really but obviously there is not THAT much flow....

Our microwave is the drawer variety under the cabinet.

All of our kitchen lighting is dimmer controlled as well.

Your kitchen looks great! I hope those tiles are all sealed up, as is the grout. Cooking splatter can be a PITA to clean if it gets in any unsealed pores.

Damn, I getting old, he is correct, there is a wall outlet behind the cook top, and that ain't legal in most any code I ever heard of.....cords catch fire when plugged in.....I see about 4 outlets where two would do...maybe one of them could be a quad....to the right of the cooktop....

:sadangel::leaving:

other than that, the joint looks GRAND......

Ahhhh. That was preexisting from before. Check the before pics. We went with larger cabinets and as a result everything shifted to the right by a foot. I agree we should have shifted it to the left of the cooktop but we didn't think of it til it was too late.

Don't matter the NEC demands it be moved.....

hate to say that, but.....I suspect NO inspector would give a final on that....

insurance companies would go NUTZ over it.....

:sadangel:

huge PIA for the electrician to fix, maybe from backside of the wall, and then redo the tile, hopefully without major problems....

amazed the kitchen designer didn't catch that, really....

Since it is too late to remove it, I would do a color matched solid plate and plate it off. It's really not a good idea to have a receptacle over the stove.

I'll just lose the outlet and tile it up. The tile guy is due at the investment prop thursday to start on the baths. I'll have him just swing by and fix it. We have plenty of oulets there anyway.
