Had to put Oakie down today. Last week was just too hard on him. He stayed down all weekend. We could only get him up a couple of times, and then he just couldn't move. Vet came and out and said "It's time." He was 35.
Oakie belonged to Lori's brother, Philip. He's had Oakie since Oakie was ten years old. I've known Oakie for 10, and I'm all torn-up; I know it's really hitting Philip hard.
Checked in on Julie after I got off work, and she's looking for Oakie. Damn, that's a kick in the gut. We'll move her out with Diego and Mocha in the next day or two.
We take comfort in that it was just his time. He was old and tired. He had had a good run for a horse. He lived long and healthy and never lacked for love.
This is one of my favorite pictures. This is Lori, Julie and Oakie. Lori has her hand on Oakie's nose. I like to think that she was there to greet him when he went.

I had tears when my cow passed
Been holding them back all day.
Oakie would stick his head under my arm when he wanted to be scratched. If I was sitting down, he'd come over and put his head on my shoulder and just stand there.
Here he is licking my arm.

When i first met my wife, she had a 25 y/o old Welsh pony. I rode that pony everywhere. She passed away last year, she was 36. I could ride her anywhere, even took her on a trail ride and she kept pace with no issue, even took me on first trip around the barrels (where i beat my wife's time), she never seemed to know her age. A lot of farm animals have come and gone since, but she is only horse that I've missed.

who knows, maybe Oakie is playing with her now.

Thanks for the condolences.
Just got off the phone with Philip. He had him cremated. We'll spread Oakie's ashes on his favorite hillside that he would lie down on to nap in the sun.

So sorry to hear of your loss. It sounds like you gave him a wonderful life and he knew he was loved and cared for. I think thats the best thing you can do for an animal.

It does work you more than you expect. You know that it was his time. You know that it was a peaceful passing. You know it had to be.
But still, that big space that they filled in our lives leaves a big void when they are gone.
