Boston man gets revenge on driver who parked in shoveled spot

A New York driver who parked in a Boston man's cleared-and-claimed parking spot earlier this month learned the hard way that in Massachusetts revenge is served ice cold.

The Boston man, who didn't want to be named, posted a now-deleted picture on Craigslist's "raves & rants" board of a car under a huge mound of snow. The poster said he had cleared out a parking space for himself and claimed it by putting an old bookshelf in the spot. The mayor of Boston has declared that people who dig out spots in the city have a 48-hour claim to them. The man told Boston.com that he left to work the night shift as an Uber driver, and when he came back later that night he found a car with New York plates in his spot, less than 24 hours after he had dug it out.

Most New Englanders understand that the cleared parking spot is a sacred claim, especially in times of extreme snowfall. To teach the New Yorker a lesson, the Boston man went out the next day and replaced all the snow he had spent so long removing from the spot.

He told Boston.com it was the best way to educate the thoughtless driver without doing permanent damage to the offending car. He was also kind enough to leave the passenger side door free so that the owner could, if necessary, get into the vehicle to remove personal articles.

My friend and I did that to a Neighbor in NY. We dug out my friends car then put a chair in it and went to get pizza for our families. When we came back a neighbor had taken the spot.We knock on the door and asked him to move. he slammed the door.

We buried his car ,with the help of other neighbors, then poured water over it all. SOB never did that again.

Having lived in the South my entire life I had no idea about cleared spots. If I hadn't read this thread I could see me parking in a spot and feeling lucky to have found one, assuming I ever found myself in the north during winter. Different rules.

We spend hours outside shoveling snow and clearing a spot for our vehicles. That's why it's such a possessive thing. We EARNED that spot.

Yes and its marked with chairs, cans and other things to show it’s taken. (A prudent person would be wise to stay the hell out)

Try taking a parking spot like that in Troy, Green Island New York (Albany area) and you could have big problems. That could include violence to you, your car iced, windows busted out and snow put in or towed/pushed away by a not too gentle spot holder. In most cases the local LEOs will back the home owner. It’s a well know long time tradition in those areas !

No I do not live there but I have plenty of friends that live there!

it's one thing to come along and find a spot that is cleared and taking it, and another thing entirely to come along, find a cleared spot with something in it, then move it and take the spot! That makes it a real dickhead move :issues:

Hmmmm....mixed feelings on this one. If I was stopping for say...an hour and couldn't find any spots to park and all these markers were on the PUBLIC street I would be pissed off. They don't own the street, especially if they go to work all day and expect no one to use that PUBLIC spot. :bilmem:

BTW.....I live in the snow belt of Canada, and we don't have any rules about, or chairs on the streets protecting public street spots. That's unheard of up here.

don't get me wrong I understand and it makes sense I just have never had reason to think about that before. I'm glad we don't have to shovel snow. I would think that would get old really quick.
