Man Sells Watch He Found at Secondhand Store for $35,000

PHOENIX — Feb 18, 2015, 4:15 PM ET

A watch collector spotted a rare Swiss timepiece in a Phoenix secondhand store, bought it on sale for $5.99 and then sold it for $35,000.

Zach Norris said he went to a Goodwill store in January to look for a golf cart but took some time to peruse the watch section.

It proved to be time well-spent.

Norris said he was excited when he recognized the 1959 Jaeger-LeCoultre diving watch, he told KTVK-TV.

"I've found some stuff in the past that I have been really excited about and stoked, but this is one of those things you're like, 'One day, one day it will happen,' and it happened for me," Norris told the TV station.

Norris took his purchase to a dealer for the brand, Oliver Smith Jeweler in the Phoenix suburb of Scottsdale. The business' watchmaker authenticated the timepiece, Vice President Paul White said.

The watch was "worn, but not badly worn, certainly wearable," White said.

Norris announced his find on a website for watch collectors, and a San Francisco enthusiast gave Norris $35,000 plus a less valuable watch.

Asked about the price tag, White said it was "market-driven." The watch was part of a production run of about 1,000 and "a rare enough piece" that it would have garnered interest among collectors, White said.

Norris says the proceeds will help pay for his wedding.

The discovery shows there are deals to be had at the thrift stores, Goodwill spokeswoman Summer Dunham said.

"We're happy for him," Dunham said.

It makes a lot more sense than cutting in Goodwill, the charity that's supposed to help disabled people on part of that money.

Ours was right at $5k counting her dress, and anything else you can think of.

...and almost $3k of that was fireworks (4th of July weekend). :)

:iagree: We spent about $3500 for our ceremony on a beach in St. Thomas.
Pastor did the service at no charge as we bought his plane ticket and room.

Dad's paid for meals and we felt no need for a tacky band or dj.

It was an outstanding wedding that people talked about for a long time after.

Ours was something like $500 including the rings. Paid for it myself, my grandfather did the officiating. My wife's mom's friend supplied the wedding dress and tux (she owned a wedding shop), our rings were under $300, and my father-in-law told us that if we paid for the wedding ourselves he'd give us $1000, which we really appreciated. 29th anniversary coming up in May. :D

Ours all together was around $15k. Wedding in New Orleans, and a second reception 2 weeks later in Galveston for 300 people.

$35,000 ???

Heck, that's a reason to cancel the wedding, and live off of hookers for awhile.

Yeah but wasn't Chris (Stangkiller) at your reception? That's gotta account for like what, $5000 in alcohol? :leaving:

Ours was $26 and change. Married in hospital chapel by the hospital Chaplin. I wore my dress uniform, she wore street clothes. Clinic staff attended and set up a party for us with cake. I made the flower arraingement myself using roses off bushes I bought on sale at a garden center ( it was exactly what my wife wanted.) Had dinner that night at our favorite Chinese restaurant, where the owner tore up the bill as a gift. Then we later PCS'd to Germany, where we had our honeymoon. Still married after 32 years.

She's not leaving until she gets the reception she's entitled to.

I'll never forget doing a drive by on the way home from the bars one night and saw one named Rhonda over on East 5th street that I knew... so pulled around the corner to just say hello..

I'll be danged if my cousin Willy wasn't standing there already talking to her... :Jeff '79:

Is anyone taking in count of the inflation of the dollar from when they got married today.

The media has done a great job of brain washing my generation that we should spend all the moeny on materialistic weddings, clothes, and whatever else. Hopefully I'll find a conservative women who is as sensible as me, if I don't I guess I'll be a man with a load of money and a dog
