View Full Version : Bathroom fixture shopping
Mrs. DAB and I went shopping today for her new shower and tub controller. found one she likes, waiting for the quote to come back $$$$ :faint:, and in the course of talking with the nice sales lady, mentioned that i've built cabinets in the past, and showed her some pics of our kitchen i did from scratch.
she asks if i've ever thought about making similar stuff for others...um....thought about it, but don't want to do it presently. see no need to get involved with some rich witch from the other side of town who will critique my work, reject it, insist i do it all over again (at my cost of course), and end up losing money and hair on the transaction. pass. i'll build for Mrs. DAB, and if i like you, i'll have you come by the shop and help out on your project.

I agree with your decision. Unless you know that these folks are after nothing but quality cabinets, then it's likely just a money-making attempt by them. Your scenario of how it will likely go is correct.
i have a certain way of making cabinets, one way for kitchens, another for baths. clean, simple lines, solid wood door and drawer fronts. but you get some rich chick involved, who fancies herself a cabinet expert, and there is nothing but trouble ahead.

You sound as though you've got experience with those types....sounds pretty much exactly why my wife is doing corporate interiors and not home interiors anymore.
Little experience.
High end plumbing shop. They attract high end buyers. And us. The rich live on the other side of town.
I don't need the headaches nor the possible $$$.

:island14: you could price out a kitchen, with the plan of redoing the cabinets two or three times over. You very well still may find a few buyers :yesnod: It may pay for the new shop rather quickly.

The cabinets in our kitchen, lumber, hardware etc, cost about $7,000.
Say I price it at 70k. Govt will take half of that. Screw that.

Time for a better accountant. :yesnod:
Lets not forget about the Depreciation deduction on equipment and the new shop, the insurance, the power, accountant, internet, the dogfood (need security right?), and all the other costs that would be applicable. :yesnod:

Can't get what they don't know about. :leaving:
I don't want to deal with the paperwork.
And paying someone wipes out my share. Why bother?

My brother does high end kitchen cabinets. Not unusual for it to be $50K for cabinets and hardware (does not include counter tops, etc)
You get into that kind of business and the BS you have to be ready to handle is incredible.
Of course he has a Ferrari in his garage and I have a 1999 Chevy

Yeh, I hear you,......but there are only two kitchens I have built with my own hands....the last house up north with a cab maker's gear in my back garage...and this kitchen here out of a circular saw a few rip fences on a couple saw horses, some edging in the euro style....and some hinges, and a grand worth of solid maple doors total cost about 3500 bux, including moving a bearing wall....reinforced with steel plates on either side of the weak spot.....~8' on the horizontal, and 4' to the roof top metal joint....that bitch going nowhere.....
Now to compare with a friend and his flip house....he puts in over top of old trash cabinets, A GRANITE TOP and some typical arky-tech's plans to leave the house SO totally dated and unsellable that I just stand there amazed....This is So amazing to me that we are planning on taking pix and so forth...the layout, the interior, the so called yard....just stupid shit laid out in the late 60's by a bunch of hippies.......wait till you see those pix, you not believe it.....and neither would I, except I seen it with my own eyes....
:hurray:
:issues::rofl:
Now, if I show you our kitchen, and you start waving $$$$$ in my face, I might reconsider, but it better be a shit load of $$$$$. :DAB:
