Police: Man Took $500 From Bank Drive-Thru Left by Another

CLEARFIELD, Pa. — Feb 9, 2015, 12:40 PM ET

Police say a Pennsylvania man hoping to pass a fraudulent check instead stole $500 when he found that much money left behind by another customer at a drive-thru bank window.

Twenty-eight-year-old Randy Gillen Jr. was in the Clearfield County Jail on Monday, awaiting a Feb. 11 preliminary hearing.

Police tell WJAC-TV that the Clearfield man hoped to cash a bogus $1,900 check at CNB Bank, but instead drove away when he saw the money left behind in the carrier tube from the previous customer on Jan. 29.

Police say Gillen later tried to pass the bad check at another bank, and was rebuffed before Clearfield police found him last Wednesday, hiding in his girlfriend's closet.

Online court records don't list an attorney for him.

Funny this story was posted today....

Yesterday I went to the ATM and had to wait for the lady in front of me to finish her transaction. When she rolled away and I pulled up to the ATM screen it was prompting me as to whether I wanted to make another transaction or not... I of course selected no and cleared the machine for my use.

You see not too long ago my bank's ATM had a major change in the way it reads and returns one's ATM card. Used to be you put your card in, entered your pin and then you conducted your business. Once your transaction was completed the card was spit back out and on your way you go. Now the machine takes your ATM and asks for a pin, however once you enter your pin correctly it immediately spits the ATM card back out and you are now free to conduct your transaction. The last thing the ATM does is ask if you are finished or not. If you just drive away instead of selecting "Finished" on the screen the question remains on the screen for 10-15 seconds before auto-clearing/resetting. Seems kind of dumb to me and just aching to be abused by the next person in line.

Not all ATM's are like that, U.M. All the ones I frequent do NOT spit out your card until ALL transactions are processed by the current user.

OD, WATCH IT!!!! My walk up ATM at the CU used to do that, and so I would grab the printed receipt and walk away, as did many other customers, the bank all the time collecting them and turning them over to customers when asked.....I finally lost 200 bux to some smartass bastard that grabbed my card, and got it from another ATM I made the mistake of writing my PIN # on the card.....this all about a dozen years ago....

I always wait for both my card and receipt to spit out and for the screen to clear and revert to "attract" mode.:seasix:

I used to program those ATM machines. Some of my customers wanted the card returned immediately to avoid having so many swallowed cards because people walked away after getting their cash. We always advised those "card before cash" customers to make certain to terminate the user's session at the end of every transaction.

When ATM machines went to Swipe readers, it became even more important to terminate the session properly so the "Do You Want Another Transaction" never appeared.

Bad idea to allow chained transactions if the card is not captive.....:kick:
