View Full Version : What was the BEST Super Bowl?

Just killing time until the game starts. I vote for Super Bowl III (1969), Jets vs. Colts. That game had fans charged up like no other: Joe Namath predicting a win ("I guarantee it."), the 13-1 season Colts were a 20-point favorite, America was Number 1 in the space race again (Apollo 8 had just completed the first manned flight around the moon), and Broadway Joe was an all-American hero (albeit with bad knees!).
The game was unusual; the highest scorer was the placekicker, Namath didn't throw a single touchdown pass, and the Colts decided not to start the game with Unitas. By the time Unitas entered the second half, Namath and the Jets not only had won the game but the hearts of the Nation as well. I was 15 at the time, and I can still remember my heart pounding as I watched the game.

I thought so, too. I remember, when they brought Unitas in in the 4th, and the clouds parted and he was bathed in a golden ray of sunlight, that the Colts would pull it out. But Joe Willie delivered, and started his long road to alcoholism and lechery...but he looked great in pantyhose.

The Oakland Raiders have captured three World Championships of professional football with victories in Super Bowls XI, XV and XVIII.
Each Super Bowl was marked by dominating performances in all three phases of the game—offense, defense and special teams

Yeah, I remember it too. I remember my old man was absolutely certain that the Colts would crush the Jets and I was just as certain that Joe Willy was gonna win.
My old man was pissed when the game was over, especially after the Colts put in Johnny U and he didn't pull out the victory.
It was a good game, low scoring but good.

Can't deny that...statistics don't lie. I guess by the "best" Super Bowl I mean one that was truly memorable, that had fans built up to a frenzy and the game didn't disappoint, that fans talked about for weeks (years?) afterward. I wonder how many Super Bowls people remember by number? Sure, the last one--44--that had the Saints and...somebody in it. But Super Bowl III? Oh, yeah--the Jets and Colts. Maybe the Super Bowl was younger and fresher then and made a bigger impression?
Joe didn't start drinking after III, he had issues well before that re: drinking. I don't judge Joe to harshly. The guy was in pretty much steady pain for years and of course he's had two knee replacements already.
Still, he played within himself that day and followed the game plan. Boozer and especially Snell ripped the Colts a new one.
The Unitas factor is over-rated; Johnny's elbow was a mess and he had difficulty getting any velocity on the ball.

Your Dad was not alone in his opinion--by all logic the Colts should have won. I guess what made it golden was the brass of Namath in guaranteeing a win against a highly favorited team and then pulling it off. Remember, Namath was a show-boater with bad knees and a sometimes erratic player who wasn't shy about his hard drinking and womanizing.

As he said, to his date that nite, "Thanks for the Mammaries." ... and I loved his coat.
Humorously, I started rooting for the Jets in '65 (my hometown club) as you couldn't get Giants tix but, for the Jets, you could pick which end of the bench you wanted to sit on.
The history of my team rooting was:
1958-present --- Green Bay (I'm a secret cheesehead)
1965 - 1971 --- NYJ (see above)
1971-1981 --- Duh Bearssss
1982 - 1989 --- NYJ (homer)
1990-2006 --- Seattle Chickenhawks (homer)
2003-2010 --- Denver Broncos (homer)
with affection for the Indianapolis Colts (I met Tony Dungy in '76, when he was a Gopher, and think Peyton is a good guy), the Lions (from reading "Paper Lion" by George Plimpton, and I know Matt Millen, who's one of the world's nicest guys), the Saints (my daughter went to Tulane Med School and I've spent a lot of time in NOLA on biz and pleasure), and the Dolphins (had to love Buoniconti from Boston Pats days, Czonka, etc).

It wasn't the best played or the most exciting, but it is arguably the most important and influential.

Best Superbowls I think were watching the Dolphins win their second straight, and New Orleans their very first time at the show.
Best one for me was XXXIV - Rams vs. Titans.
A lot is made of the "guarantee" today, but it got little notice at the time Joe said it.
He made the comment to a heckler who was giving him a hard time (in jest) at a dinner gathering on a Friday evening and the story was only picked by single paper. Joe was tired of hearing "the Colts are gonna kick your ass" all effin' week.
Of course, after the game it became legend.

Well said! No, it wasn't the best played. The most exciting? Depends on what you're gauging there. The plays themselves? Agreed. But excitement for the fans? Aww, hell yeah!
Couldn't agree more with the second half of your statement. Without that game, I'm not sure ads would now cost $3M.

That was an awesome Superbowl. Watched it with 20 friends in a big condo we were renting on a little island just off Key West, then went to Duval Street for the after-party. :D

No doubt, Johnny U is one of the finest QBs to ever play the game. Tougher than a Waffle House steak and football-smart as a whip.
But Morrall gave the Colts the best chance to win that day.

I can't remember if it was the Cowboys 4th or 5th win over the Bills...
BEST FOR ME - 49ers vs. Chargers. Barely a few minutes into the game and I knew the boys were gonna win #5. Relaxed and enjoyed the beat-down.
BEST GAME - The Silver Bowl. Giants Bills, SuperBowl 25. Jim Kelly and the Bills No-Huddle, predecessor to Payton Manning. Parcells Giants, Defense, and my favorite Tar-Heel LT. Great game, and a hilarious last second ending no less.
