Curious if anyone here on this board is using this app:
https://www.whatsapp.com/
Suppose to replace SMS type messages. If you are using this app, what are your opinions when using it? Good or bad.

I probably use it for 60% of my texts. It started with me having family internationally and using it to contact them as its free. Since then I use it exclusively to text my parents, siblings, wife, cousins, etc...
The big draw for us was the international texting being free. All my friends in the states I just text normally.

Super fun to talk to my friend in Vietnam as if she were still down the street.

My sister uses the app because her husband uses the app to keep in touch with relatives in Israel. They have like a group text going on, constantly texting...
It's very popular in Israel.

Is there a benefit to using Whatsapp over the messenger app on facebook?

I got a new phone right at the time when facebook changed their phone app, and all those rumors about spyware were floating around. I never installed it.
I really only use whatsapp to talk to my friend in vietnam. It works as well as I need it to. Its as fast as any other application as long as she has a good signal (works on wifi). You can also send a voice recording instead of a text message. I have not yet used that feature though.

For starters, it's not Facebook. That's a huge plus imho

I never installed messenger either due to the same concerns. Nor has my wife.

Voice recording works great. You can carry on a conversation without typing. Think two way radio. You record and send and they listen. Then then they do the same. Back and forth.

It's not real time. It records what you say and sends it within 3 seconds or less. Then the recipient gets the message and hits the play icon to hear it. Then they hit record and say whatever they want in response.
Back and forth, back and forth, etc...
My kids used it to sing happy bday to my brother in the islands a few weeks back
