I don't want to do it, I just want to be asked.

Yeah no thanks, not enough pay for the responsibility.
I'm a construction manager. It pays well, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Most of the contractors I hire are plenty smart. But they don't give a crap. makes my life a living hell.

A lot of truth to this ...
Former Mechanical Engineer - didn't plan to go into mgmt but thought after awhile I could do a better job than those who were managing us ... so at the right time I proposed they put me in mgmt - and they did.
Got great reviews including great 360 feedback from staff - wife says be careful - they'll kick you upstairs ... thats what happened.
Retired as director at fortune 500 company. My last job I had 4 major depts and 160 staff members. Great group. My last 5 years I spent as a servant - leader - the dept teams and managers were so good I had THEM tell ME what they needed from me ... then I did the financial, political blocking and tackling so they could do what they did best. Worked out very well - been gone 4 years and still very tight with the former team.
all i ever wanted to do was some interesting engineering. after 20+ years of trying to do that i learned that some companies really don't want any original engineering done, just repeat the last project again. sigh.
now i'm in charge of my dog Leah.

Much wisdom in Dilbert.
"...we always do it this way..."
yeah....heard that too many times. :slap:
now i do whatever i want MY way.

I will say...right now we've got a hybrid geothermal/four-pipe system at a project that currently isn't working like it was expected it would.

Computer trusting engineers.... :slap:
Computer trusting engineers.... :slap:
Some of that...some of not telling a client that their expectations are unrealistic; some of it is wanting to be the innovator. I'm sure it'll work eventually; growth is painful sometimes, they'll figure it out; can't not at this point.

I enjoyed managing. My biggest pain in the ass was not the actual job, it was the petty bickering and BS that I had to deal with.
That the fact that employees really believe the company is out to get them and it just was not true. That mentality was difficult to change.
