But I just did something I've never done. I installed a garbage disposal. I'm honestly not very experienced with home repair. I didn't buy my first house until I was 45, and the house I'm in now was new when I moved in ten years ago. This is actually the first thing that has failed.

I did do it the manly way, too. I didn't read all the directions.:seasix:

Did you ground the thermocouple?

It's a garbage disposal, it'll be ground down to nothing eventually.

You DID match the rotational direction didn't you?? otherwise it will jamb up constantly because the shoot will clog quicker......

All I know is it's not on fire and it's not leaking.:yesnod:

That's kind of my go/no-go for any of my maintenance or repairs.

It's not the thermocouple that needs grounding, it's the fusion reductor :seasix:

I paid extra for the model that has two of those, so there's a back-up if one fails.:leaving:

Should I sue them? Will you represent me on a contingency basis?

I was going to ask my granddaughter to help, but she's a pre-law student, so she would have been completely useless.

Of course I will. Is when I get 'round tuit soon enough? I want to give your case the attention it deserves....:D

They only sell counter-rotating models south of the equator, so he should be OK.

Don't have one. Not a good idea with a septic system.

I replaced mine about a year after I moved in here, as I was buttoning it up, I remembered I had a home warranty that would have replaced it for free :banghead:

Congrats on the job well done! Just remember all electronics run on smoke. As long as you don't let the smoke out, they'll keep on working!

Doesn't seem to cause any problems here. The ground here is very good for septic systems. Over the years I have lived in seven houses in this area, and they all had garbage disposals.

You've been lucky. The ground food particles don't always completely degrade in a septic tank and may clog the lines.

That would be a bad thing here in eastern PA. No repairs to the field are permitted. The new approved type of septic is a sand mound and the county tells you where it will be placed. They also run $25K - $40K :willy:

My tank does have a filter where the line goes out to the leach field. I pull it out and hose it off every year or so.

I wasn't as luck as you. I installed a GD a few weeks back. Looked simple enough opening the box. Since it was the same model as what I already had I didn't have to do anything other than spin it back on to the mounting thing. However, not reading the directions (per usual) I failed to knock the punch out inside the dishwasher discharge feed. So after opening my dishwasher - and it being full with water - I had to pull the thing back out and do it right. :)

The only reason I knew to do that is my wife warned me about it due to her having an experience similar to yours many years ago.

I'm sure you are correct. My guess is the water heater will go next. That's probably okay, since I want to switch that from propane to electric anyway. I also don't think we will be in this house ten years from now. Eventually this will be too much house for us to maintain. The kids are talking about upsizing to a home with a mother-in-law unit which we would occupy.
