View Full Version : Is this NOS never-used bias ply wide whitewall tire worth anything?

It was in the spare tire location of my 61 Vette. Stickers are still on the tread, blue whitewall protective film never washed off.
It's as as-new as it could possibly be.
Pics to follow.

Would you drive your loved ones on the highway in a car with that tire installed on it?

If it's anything like original equipment tires for other cars, it's worth quite a bit to the show car, trailer queen crowd. I wouldn't drive it a tenth of a mile, though.

Of course not. :slap:
Concourse crowds like this kind of thing.
I sold an original set of DeLorean tires to a guy in Australia. $400 plus $1500 shipping.

Wow! Although, you probably could have gotten double that amount, if you also had the original NOS factory air for those tires.

How much will you sell that for?

He had one of the only two Twin-Turbo DeLoreans to ever leave the factory - VIN 502.
It is a concourse-quality car that is one of the Holy Grail cars of the DeLorean community.
He had to have them.

Did it go faster than 87 MPH? If so, has anyone heard from him since? :D

See if there is a website with classifieds that is frequented by NCRS people. Maybe even CF.

Gad, some 30 years ago, when DeLorean went belly up, some next door neighbors bought all the parts stock on the N/A continent......
Never did find out how that worked out, but I"d imagine they made out pretty good....

The DMC is north of Houston. IIRC, you can still buy a "brand new" DeLorean crafted from NOS parts. All except for the tires, probably.

Now that I think about it, I judged C1 Corvettes at a Concours some years ago, and they are fairly lenient about tires, for safety reasons. As long as they are the correct size with the correct whitewall width, you're okay. I imagine most of the cars had Coker or other repro tires.

Did you make sure those repro tires had actual vintage road gravel stuck between the treads?

Gravel or pea gravel? This is crucial....

I pea green soup, but other than that, I feel fine.

I judged interiors. I did bust a few cars for having non-working clocks.:yesnod:
Now that I think about it, judging interiors also included the trunk. I only went as far as making sure the spare matched the tires on the car. One guy lost points for missing his jack handle, IIRC.

Check for numbers on the tire to decipher a date code. I've known of NCRS Top Flight cars were the owner will 'rent' a set of correct tires and wheels just for judging.

See post #19. I know NCRS is strict on this.

Yeah, I'm sure they are. The Concours show I judged was done under SCCA rules.

I'm going to change my mind about the value. After thinking about it, if I had a car being judged by NCRS, and the results of that judgment would mean thousands of dollars on resale, I would probable pay up to 500$ for a perfect, new, old dated, original installed spare in the trunk.
Now.....you would have to find that guy to get that money, otherwise the swing idea is a good one! :D
Just for the hell of it, put an ad in CF parts. Cost nothing, and you never know. I'd ask a couple hun or best offer.....:seasix:

Looks like it was made between 3/72 and 1978.
Seeing as no cars came with that wide whitewall in that time period I'd say it's virtually worthless. It's undriveable and the markings wouldn't translate to it passing as original equipment on any car.
