You think it's cold today and gonna be colder tomorrow? You ain't seen nothin' yet!

A renewed blast of arctic air has prompted wind chill warnings for parts of 10 states in anticipation of the coldest weather since the so-called "polar vortex" event one year ago.

The combination of wind and cold air will lead to dangerous and potentially life-threatening wind chills Tuesday night and Wednesday morning over a large part of the Midwest. The frigid air will bring below-freezing temperatures all the way to the Gulf Coast by Wednesday night.

This blast will be different from the arctic chill that ended 2014, which was mainly confined to the northern tier and the West, helping bring snow to unusual places such as Las Vegas and California's Inland Empire. This time the frigid air will push much farther south and east.

The wind chills will be extremely dangerous in parts of the Midwest, especially Wednesday morning when feels-like temperatures could again flirt with 50 below zero in parts of Minnesota. Exposed skin can freeze within minutes in such conditions.

An arctic cold front will impact the mid-state area later tonight, bringing an extended period of subfreezing temperatures and the coldest weather since January 2014.
· Temperatures will fall below freezing Tuesday night and remain below freezing until Friday afternoon.
· We will experience single-digit low temperatures with highs only in the 20s and low 30s.
· Gusty north winds are expected with wind chills well below zero at times on Wednesday and Thursday.

At home and at work (if applicable), preparations should be completed today in anticipation of this upcoming long duration of subfreezing temperatures.
· Ensure water pipes are properly protected.
· Guarantee outdoor animals have adequate shelter.
· Confirm heat sources are working properly
· Safeguard motor vehicles with the proper levels of antifreeze and air pressure in tires.

Supposed to be -11 here come Wednesday night/Thursday morning with 15-20 mph winds gusting to 30mph. Oh happy joy joy. Oh, and a 60% chance of lake effect snows tomorrow. 1-3 inches.

Had 3 inches on the ground this morning. I can hear the wind whipping around as I type this. Yay! drifting show for the drive to work tomorrow.

Of course by this time last year we had almost 2 feet of snow on the ground. So far this season 5 inches. I'll take it. The cold sucks. But the snow sucks so much worse. :cert:

Average lows this time of year are in the 40s. I grew up in Northern Massachusetts so I have experienced "real" cold... ice fishing and all. One has to adapt to the heat here so my cold tolerance is low after 25 years residence here.....
