View Full Version : Can't we just agree...

First there were phonoautographs, graphophones, gramophones, and other non-electrical devices to play music from metal or was cylinders. In the 1920s electric amplifiers were used to generate sound from a groove in a thick disc. Those discs gave way to thin plastic discs and to thin plastic tape to record and generate sound. LPs, either 33 rpm or 78 rpm and then 45 rpm, and reel-to-reel recorders flourished and players.
Then came 8-track, followed quickly by cassettes, and then CDs. Now CD sales are dramatically waning in favor of digital files and iTunes. Some of us still have LPs and 45s, but they're simply worn out and only good for album art. We also haven't chunked our casettes and CDs, but we don't listen to them.
So far I've bought pretty much the same songs in 5 formats. Not cheap. Can't we just agree that today's format is where it stops? Music sounds as good as it can and is as compact as it can be. Even if not, who cares....

the point of new systems isn't to make your music sound better to you, it's to extract your money out of your wallet. :slap:
just like the point of hiring a new lawyer isn't to get back at the first lawyer your hired, it's to make the second one richer than the first.

I still have two under-dash 8Track players on a shelf in the garage, and a big box of tapes. If I ever own a 60s muscle car again, I'm going to install one in it.

My friend has his old cassette/ turntable in his barn, He runs his I-pad through it, through a pair of 1980's Kenwood speakers and it sounds great.
I'm going to pillage my SIL's bedroom at her dad's house and grab her old stereo and do the same thing. She said I can have it. I already have massive Kenwood speakers from my old rack system, so I'm ready to fill up my barn with great sounding tunes this spring.
It looks something like this.
Vintage stereo sound using digital inputs. It really sound good. I like the vintage look of it too

I have a pair of massive 30+ year-old Fisher speakers in my workshop, a turntable, and a cassette player. Even though it's in the workshop under less than ideal heat, cooling, and moisture standards, it puts out incredible sound.

:yesnod: I'm running my Kenwoods through a Sony boombox right now, but after hearing my friend's setup, I'm going older and will have all of the convenience of streaming music.
My Kenwoods have taken a beating over the years and still sound great.

I still have and use regularly my 1971 Pioneer SX 9000 receiver. It used to be in the garage when I had the Corvette, but since selling it I don't spend much time out there, so I moved it to my den. I got rid of my ESS towers (they needed work) and downsized to some Bose 301s.

I retired my Pioneer VSX-4700S receiver that I got in the early 90's to the garage. Hooked up to a couple of custom 48" tall towers that a buddy of mine made for me years ago.
I chit you not. The sound dial on this thing goes to 30. It has never gone past 20 here. I Swear. :leaving:

Speak for yourself. My '04 Vert has a cassette player in the dash, and it gets more use than the 12 disc changer in the trunk, although that gets used, too.
late 60's-late 80's classics, including copies of all of my albums? Yep....on cassette tape.

My Dad lost a pair of Fisher speakers when the house flooded. Those things rocked. The bass would rattle the plates stacked in the kitchen cabinets. Mom still has the Fisher head unit, paired with a pair of Bose 301's in bookshelves. Still sounds pretty good.

I've got a pair of these, and yeah, those are old school 15" woofers. I actually melted both forward facing tweeters playing a dance in college. The top firing tweeters made it, though.

My receiver/amplifier is a Harman/Kardon tube-type. Double-deck cassette player is a Fisher. Those things are indestructible and built like a vault.

Listen to the first 40 seconds of this song at 10 and you'll see how good your speakers really are. As the song progresses, you'll wish the dial went to 15.

Truth spoken for the most part. That's why I enjoy spending time researching audio components that work well together and don't break the bank.
Good equipment, well placed and tuned will outperform systems that cost many times more.
In recent years there have been small companies created by other audio nuts that wanted to bring very good quality audio to market without draining folks dry.
I've spent the last year putting together a very good 2 channel room that is very enjoyable to me. Sometimes I put on 180 gram vinyl that sounds incredible on the right equipment.
Not that it surpasses the clarity of the digital realm but a good pressing through an excellent phono stage, out to a great amp and speakers is really great.
I also enjoy playing SACDs, MoFi Masters etc but the vinyl has been fun. Found a German 180 gram pressing of Dire Straits Love Over Gold. Danielle walked in and said "what cd is this"?
She said she would swear it sounded as good as an old cd of theirs.

I have this exact amp/pre-amp and tuner in my basement.. Yamaha M-85 Amp and C-85 Pre Amp.
http://img.canuckaudiomart.com/uploads/large/270914-yamaha_m85_power_amp_also_have_pre_amp_and_reciever.jpg
it can run 40 Watts as a pure Class A amp, or up to 260 Watts as a Class AB into 8 ohms. I also have their DSP-1 digital signal processor, one of the first on the market. The Pre-Amp also has a parametric equalizer (instead of a bass/treble adjustment).
I love this old stuff.
