There's this one place in town that sells huge boiled peanuts, extra large like I remember as a kid. They don't require as much salt as the smaller ones, and the hulls are very tender; in fact, you can eat the hulls of some of them. I picked up 2 pounds of them.

Come dinner time, I'm having the peanuts along with Tostitos, Salsa Con Queso cheese dip, medium-hot chunky salsa, and a cold beer. Yep, there might be Hell to pay with my stomach tomorrow, but fcuk it. It's not even 5:00 o'clock, but I'm getting hungry just thinking about those peanuts.

Folks, this is where we draw the line of Southern and Yankee tastes: Yankees despise boiled peanuts (although they eat hominy, so go figger), and Southerners consider them manna from Heaven. There's enough hate for other folk's food tastes already (Poutine, anyone?), so show some respect, ya heah?

Hominy is just as nasty as boiled peanuts.

Edit: I haven't actually eaten boiled peanuts. The smell is enough to drive me away.

Made some poutine the other day. Made up some bacon gravy for it. Was delicious. :leaving:

It's just water and salt. Did you perhaps have Cajun boiled peanuts? Nothing but raw peanuts boiled in Shrimp and Crab Boil and nasty.

Folks, I just finished eating dinner. Dayum...that was a great combination! I switched back to a gin and tonic mid-meal,and that only enhanced the flavor of everything. After several dozen burps and farts, I'll be good to go!

LATB posted that he loves grits. Fried okra. Purple hull field peas. Poke salad. Honey biscuits. Sweet potato pie. Peach cobbler. Sweet tea. Bless you, my child. You made my mouth drool and my heart soften. In that order.

I don't know which it was but it was in Georgia. Did not taste anything at all like peanut :ack:

I never ate hominy until I moved south. Edible at best.

I've never tried boiled peanuts in the 20 years I've been here.

Grits blow too.

The women rock though, so i'll just eat BBQ. :D

You likely had Cajun boiled peanuts or some weird home recipe. That's not to say that boiled peanuts taste much like a roasted peanut, though. It's a different taste altogether, but still somewhat recognizable as a peanut in taste. I think it's the soft texture of a boiled peanut that's weird to folks.

Seek out a Mexican taqueria on a weekend and get a bowl of menudo. That's the way to eat hominy.

Never understood the grits thing, though. I could just pour a cup of melted butter on cardboard and achieve roughly the same taste.

In a prior job I used to spend a fair amount of time in The South ( I lived in PA at that time) there were a couple of things I developed a taste for
Sweet tea
Carolina style BBQ (I currently live in the St Louis area and still prefer Carolina style which makes me a BBQ pariah in this area)
Grits
Hush Puppy's
Gumbo (all kinds)

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think a large number of people's aversion to Southern food staples is just from lack of trying them. I'm actually not a big fan of grits, but they do taste okay with lots of butter and black pepper. Shrimp and cheese grits...meh.

Wet BBQ is the best, whether it's a mustard-based sauce or a tomato-based sauce. Dry BBQ just doesn't have a deep, slow-cooked flavor to me. And it's...well, dry.

Who could not love Hush Puppys and Gumbo? Whether you like fried catfish or not, Hush Puppys are just delicious! Gumbo? Southern/Creole cooking at its best.

What about fried green tomatoes?

Catfish and Gumbo rock ... when done right.

Never could get into Hush Puppies. Not that they're bad, just not my thang.

I can see your objection to Hush Puppies since most are way too greasy and over-cooked. If, however, you come across a "light" (not greasy) Hush Puppy that is large and cooked just right, you will likely change your mind. There also needs to be a delicate amount of green onions in them; that can make a break a Hush Puppy right there and turn it into a heavy glob of corn meal instead of a light, fluffy delicacy.

Hominy is just corn soaked in Drano. Pass
Berled peanuts are tasty.
Grits are ok, but so is Cream 'O' Wheat.
Sweet Tea is hideous. I guess it would be ok mixed with raspberry vodka.
Carolina pulled pork beats the crap out of any tomato based recipe.
Fried okra, green tomatoes and pickles are really tasty.

Gumbo and hush puppies? You've opened up a whole new world...

I see possibilities in you, friend! Although I'd discard the combo of Gumbo with Hush Puppies....

Fried dill pickles. Fried asparagus!!!!! Get a 10 ounce Coke in a real glass bottle like God intended, sip a bit off and fill the void with salted Planter's peanuts. Sip and savor, then suck the nuts out last... MMMM.
EDIT: Add hoop cheese, Vienna Sausages and pickled pig's feet to the list of Southern delicacies too... just eat the feet in the other room please.:leaving:

It's the horrible odor. Almost as bad as paper mills and chicken plants.

Heavens no. One only needs a fine cocktail and some comfortable shoes.
