View Full Version : 10 Bolt chevy posi question
I have a 10 bolt posi rear for my 47 Olds project, but it is pretty rusty. I found another 10 bolt out of a chevy, but it's not a posi unit. Does anyone know if I can swap out the internals from the posi unit to the non posi unit?

Are they both 8.5-inch 10-bolt? If they are the same, all internals are interchangeable using the same series carriers for the ring gears. (except for the truck differentials with 30-spline axles)
I think so. I need to go look at the other one to make sure. :cert:

G80 gov lock, or an actual limited slip? The Eaton g80 gov lock in thev10 bolts was pretty weak behind power.
How do I determine that? :island14:

Do you have access to the RPO code sticker in the glove box? If it says G80, you've got posi. A limited slip is usually a passive system that will allow some slipping under normal driving conditions but when more slipping occurs it then tightens up to reduce the slipping and possibly fully lock. The G80 was supplied by Eaton and called the 'gov lock' and is an example of a limited slip. In the aftermarket the Eaton Tru Trac is a popular all around limited slip. I have the Eaton Posi in my '69 Camaro and it is supporting 540 hp.
Both of these rear ends are out of parts cars. Mine was a 77 Impala, and I have no idea what the other one came from. If I pop the cover what should I be looking for?

GM calls Posi and Limited Slip differentials the same. The limited slip is on the left, and the open is on the right. You can tell it is a limited slip by the spring in between the spider gears, and the limited slip has a lot more supports running through the gear mount.
Also, an original limited slip carrier for an 8.5" GM corporate rear end will have the cast number 410408N.
Thanx for the visual! :cert:

Look for a stamping on the axle tube from the factory.
