Goodwill Workers Find Cremated Remains in Donation

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Dec 15, 2014, 4:41 PM ET

Two boxes of cremated human remains mistakenly included among household items donated to an Indiana Goodwill have been reunited with the deceased's next of kin, police said.

Goodwill employees sorting through donated items Friday found two small, white boxes filled with cremains, Lafayette police Sgt. Grant Snyder told the Journal & Courier.

A merchandise sorter found the boxes inside velvet pouches inside a larger box, store manager Paula Strong said.

"When she pulled them out of the red velvet bags, that is when she realized that they were from a crematory and what they were," Strong said.

Each box was marked with a date and name, which police used to reunite the remains with survivors.

It's not uncommon for donors to drop off mystery items after cleaning out their relatives' homes, Strong said. But Friday's discovery ranks as the "strangest" thing she's seen at her store.

"I'm just happy that they did find the family," she said.

Years ago down here, wife's son and I were cleaning out a garage/house ready to remodel and paint the joint, the family living there was finally evicted after the death of some high ranking Navy officer.....

one of the items we found on top of a water heater was this box in a plastic bag, same thing but we had no clue as to what, so into the dumpster.....

A friend of mine Jim once told me a story that if true was plenty funny..

He says he had just cleaned out the fireplace, and had swept the last of the ashes up and dumped them into a can that he then set on the coffee table.

About that time a friend had stopped by and had come into the house, but somehow knocked the can over onto the carpet. opps.. I'm sorry..

Jim says he exclaimed in a serious tone.. "You spilled my grandpa"

He says the look on his friends horror stricken face was priceless..
