Countless Crows, Droppings Rankle Ohio Residents
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — Dec 11, 2014, 6:36 AM ET
Thousands of crows roosting at night in a western Ohio city's downtown leave some residents comparing the crow-laden landscape to the Alfred Hitchcock movie "The Birds" as they work to drive away the flocks.
The crows troubling Springfield aren't aggressive, as birds in the 1963 thriller were portrayed. But with an estimated 50,000 of them at times, their overwhelming presence on trees, buildings and other perches is causing concern about damage to buildings and potential health hazards from the birds' waste.
Downtown businesses and city workers are using noise devices and laser pointers among other deterrents. The CEO of the Clark County Historical Society says removing the droppings left at the county's Heritage Center and other buildings also is costly for property owners.
