Hallmark Pulls Gift Wrap After Swastika Complaint

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Dec 9, 2014, 9:44 AM ET

Hallmark Cards Inc. has removed blue and silver gift wrap from circulation after a customer complained that she saw a swastika embedded in the design.

The Kansas City, Missouri-based company alerted retailers to the problem Monday after receiving a complaint Sunday night from a Walgreen's customer in Northridge, California. The disputed wrap was featured in a Hanukkah display but Hallmark spokeswoman Julie Elliott says the gift wrap wasn't intended for the Jewish holiday.

The Kansas City Star reports the gift wrap was distributed by Walgreen's, which is no longer selling it.

Elliott said in a news release that Hallmark didn't intend to offend anyone.

She said it was an oversight that no one at Hallmark noticed that intersecting lines in the paper could be seen as a swastika pattern

But how do we know which color paper to use? :willy:

I wonder how upset that person is about the original insignia of the US Army's 45th Infantry Division. You know, the one that fought through Europe and liberated Dachau concentration camp...

That symbol did not start with Nazi Germany.

That is true, and the crescent and star wasn't originally a symbol of Islam, but I doubt many would be cool with Christmas wrapping paper emblazoned with it.

I hear ISIS flag sweaters are this year's hot gift.

not to mention the original use of the symbol in many cultures like the Native Americans as well as Hindu and Buddhism. One bad man quickly turned a symbol of good into one of evil. Same with the pentagram vs pentacle.

My point is, that symbol can be found in many places and patterns, occurring intentionally or accidentally. It's going to show up here and there and people need to have at least some critical thinking skills or they will be forever "offended".

Wait, so what you're saying is that people need to grow the feck up and NOT try to find things that offend them? I think you might be taking things too far with an opinion like that.

HA!, well it depends. I remember when Wal Mart started selling shirts with the actual insignia of the SS Death Squad, most likely because someone found clip art of a cool looking skull. They issued an apology and pulled it.

WHY?: Wal-Mart Still Selling Nazi Death’s Head Battalion T-Shirts (http://www.debbieschlussel.com/2702/why-wal-mart-still-selling-nazi-deaths-head-battalion-t-shirts/)

That I could see, especially if little Jimmy shows up at great grand dad's house sporting his swell new shirt.
It wasn't a matter of interpretation, it was a legitimate identical representation.

Nobody thinks of the original uses of the swastika anymore. The theft of the symbol is complete.

I get it, we all hate the whiners and the looking-to-be-offended jackholes of society these days, but there are instances where people should be mindful of what a symbol means to others.

I'm so sick of this "it doesn't affect me, so it doesn't matter" mentality. For f*cks sake 6 million people were slaughtered under that symbol.

No, 6 million people were slaughtered under the leadership of a mad man. Don't blame some picture for the atrocities that he orchestrated.

Yes that is now a symbol of hate and unfortunately it can never be taken back. But I think we need to get BACK to more of a it doesn't affect me so it doesn't matter attitude. Not saying to ignore the genocide of 6 million people but it's time to let the past be in the past. Learn from it, Remember it but stop fecking dwelling on it. Stop worrying about everybody else and start focusing on YOURSELF. Make yourself better, raise your children to be the same. Yes, there will always be assholes in the world. Ignorant Bigots, religious zealots, and general psychopaths but all we can do is chug along and keep trying.

You can talk about moving on and learning from the past until you have no breath in your lungs, but to most, that symbol will always represent a hatred that only a very few will ever comprehend.

Ive always been intrigued, or..at least interested in this time in world history, unfortunately I fear much of its value will be lost with the outgoing generation due to the fact that most school history classes do not reach much past the 1910's...before the year is out...

Hitler was off his f*cking rocker, but you have to give him credit, he turned a whole nation against a large group of people, he spread his ideals across the oceans, and to be hones,t made a valiant effort at taking over the entire world...in just a matter of a few years...
