In the book, Peter Pan is a boy. But in every stage performance it's played by a girl.

Because he's supposed to have never grown up.
What looks like a small boy, but is still able to have the stamina to work an entire stage performance?
and she is light enough to be swung around by stage hands to "fly"

Why does everything have to about gender? Little boys and little girls are very much the same: No boobs, no public hair, no sense. They even sound alike since their voices haven't changed. If you put one in your bed, you wouldn't be able to tell them apart: Because if you touched them to find out, you'd go to jail. Damned perverts are everywhere.
Stick with dogs and horses and you'll not have those worries. I don't like pigs, though.
