Looks like you are right in line for a hit on Saturday. You might go get some petrol for the generator, plenty of water, and rice...It is still getting stronger.

Found this pic recently. Been meaning to send it to Tim. http://i57.tinypic.com/281v8yu.jpg If you look closely, Tim's house is right across the street from the church and basketball court.

The stage in the area by the basketball court is where Santa handed out presents last year.

The church is the white building right in the middle. The basketball court is just to the left (the churches right)

That was my first thought when I read Robs mail to warn us awhile ago..

They say a nipa roof is good for about 8 years.. but It does not sound like I'm going to get a chance to find out..

This time I am going to start moving anything that can be water damaged out to the guest house where there is a steel roof and still put tarps over everything.

I remember when the plane flew over last year on November 9th the day after the storm, and waved at it as I somehow knew they were taking pics.

Too early to track it accurately yet but they are saying it looks like it will land at Samar... so we are in the path if it stays on track.

It does not sound as bad as last years though, and we do not have many trees left to fall like before.

Well hell....

Just heard a siren as a police truck just pulled up out at the basketball court and they were making an announcement over a bull horn for us to evacuate to higher ground tomorrow when the rain starts..

They are really worried about storm surge especially because it might be high tide, where as last years storm it was low tide at the time it hit.

The official weather news website says it will be later though and shows it hitting us on Sunday.. so not sure why they are warning us for tomorrow.

Looks like a bulls eye again.. :yesnod:

This one wont be as strong of a storm it appears so far, but will still probably take the roof off again.. :(

I was just told to tell you guys that you need to head over to Mandaue in the morning. Not sure if they have shut off the ferries though?

island14

I think we still have a few days, tomorrow we will stock up on water, rice and some food stocks.

The weather website says Sunday morning.

http://www.pagasa.dost.gov.ph

Will start moving everything to the guest house tomorrow so less likely to get wet like the last time unless there is a storm surge, but then it will be underwater if so.

Probably head up to Dino's place again for the high ground after the power goes out here on Saturday sometime I'm guessing.

I can't go to Mandaue, and have too much work to do here to get ready for this.. the boats are still running and the weather was beautiful here today, so I will ask Irish if she wants to head down to the City tomorrow with the kids.

Not sure how bad this will be but guessing the power will be out at least a few days and so will all cell phones, So we will text MC to let her know we are ok as soon as we can.

The generator runs but is not making electric, the mechanic says he will be here Friday to see if he can fix it.

I really do not want to go through all this crap again....

As of last night they were only calling for a signal 3 and we were talking about it some thinking this will be a breeze as compared to last years signal 5 Super Typhoon.

I see now that they say this one has increased to a Super Typhoon also.

This map above that you found shows it is going to turn north and the eye will miss us and we will not be in the danger zone.

The map below I have been following shows it is going to drive right over us again..

http://www.pagasa.dost.gov.ph/tropical-cyclone

http://www.pagasa.dost.gov.ph/images/ruby_14120318.gif

I know you studied weather some Rob, so please explain this to me..

How in the heck can they say this is going to change track before it gets here?

It's wind! heck it does not have a mind or even know where it is going or what it is going to do itself? :island14:

Last year with Yolanda the tracking showed it was going to go north of us, but at the last moment it zigged when it was suppose to zag and drove right over us.

I'm thinking it easy to track and see the direction where it is going, but they can only just make educated guesses as to any changes in direction. :island14:

------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is late in the day here now so no more boats, but I plan to send Irish and the Kids to the City on the first boat out in the morning.

Better safe than sorry.. and I want to make sure they are all OK.

Last year the house we were in at Dino's place on high ground.. the whole roof was ripped off, I was worried at the time the concrete walls would collapse... and it does happen.

I saw many concrete walls that did not make it last year. :yesnod:

Myself and brother in law Ariel will stay here with the house and try to save all we can from the storm.

Kind of a funny story from last night while drinking some Rhum with a few of the guys.

I was telling Tata how I do not wish any harm to others, but I do pray that this storm will go north and miss us.

Tata thought about it for a second then said..

"Yeah but... just remember there are a whole lot of people up north praying it right back to us..."

It's wind! heck it does not have a mind or even know where it is going or what it is going to do itself? :island14:

Remember the wind can go only where it is the higher force of energy. Now, there might be another larger pressure system, either high or low, that might be north or south of the typhoon, so the typhoon is going to follow the path of least resistance. The momentum is there to continue the westerly path, but there may be air currents preventing it from moving north or south.

If you want to get real technical - you have to look at things like the isobars which are the linear lines of wind based on a directional inbound or outbound flow.

Look at this map - you can see that there is some strong pressure coming out of Japan right now so my guess is that Ruby will track more south than north.

earth :: an animated map of global wind, weather, and ocean conditions (http://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/surface/level/orthographic=-226.45,13.35,512)

And there is nothing to the south of Ruby that appears to be holding it back from descending.

Here is a screen capture of it currently if the java applet does not load

Thanks for taking the time to explain this and it's all starting to make sense now.

From what you say and I see the chances are more likely to head more to us than away.

Remember after last years storm I said, what are the odds of this happening again in a lifetime? and I thought they were very slight..

First of all I doubted there would be another storm as big as Yolanda, and even less likely that it would be here again if it did happen.

I see now that this is not as big as Yolanda was yet, but still has a few more days to build up to be as big or even possibly bigger they are saying.

Meanwhile all is calm before the storm here..

Everyone seems relaxed but worried some, today was sunny and beautiful out all day, this evening there is a slight breeze that feels good and normal for this time of the year.

Disco over in Sillion again tonight, we may go later for something to do.

All ferry boats out are cancelled already I just found out awhile ago, even though the weather is fine here for now.. so the only way for Irish and the kids to go is by pump boat, and I am seriously not going to risk putting them on a pump boat.

Rob

Project NOAH executive director Mahar Lagmay also identified the areas where storm surges will be greatest. Storm surges as high as four meters—the height of a one-storey house—may be expected in Carigara and Babatngon in Northern Leyte; Santa Rita and Basey in Eastern Samar; and Tacloban City.

Of course since I have about 48 hours left before the storm hits, I will plan to protect all we can..

We do not have much, but don't want to loose what little we have.

All coconuts will be downed so they do not end up as cannon balls blasting through my roof like the last time...

I know what does and does not need to be moved downstairs to protect it now from experience..

When the power goes out sometime on Saturday.. I will pack up the computer in a plastic sack as it is my job and our income and need to protect it.

But at the end of the day when I have done all I can to pack things away the best I can..

The most important thing is for me to be with my little ones to protect them all.. :yesnod:

I will be right beside them to do the best that I can to make sure they are all ok, the same as the last time.. :seasix:

Irish and the kids all left to higher ground this morning and I have been moving stuff around to better spots to stay dry in case we loose the roof again.

Better safe than sorry I guess..

I just got back home from checking on my family and the feeling is kinda surreal out there tonight.

Not many people out, and the few I saw were carrying sacks of possessions so I assumed they were heading to higher ground places to stay.

The churches and schools are already full of people sleeping there, I guess they wanted to be early to reserve themselves a spot.

The place where Irish wanted to go is over near Sillion on high ground, it's where Tata's mother in law lives, in a group of homes that were built by Islamic Relief.

Nicely built small homes about the size of a one car garage, 14 X 16 foot.. and about 75 of them lined up in rows.

Plenty far enough from the sea and high enough so no problems, and no trees nearby to fall on the homes there either... so that I liked.

Chico my older son came home with me as he was bored there, but we will head back over there sometime tomorrow.

Like Rob said it looks like the eye of the storm is going to pass north of us from the maps online at this time, and the storm has also started to slow down some they say.

So things are looking better now as compared to yesterday anyways..

I think they should just cancel it due to rain myself. :D

The storm lost, then regained, super typhoon status Friday. By Friday night, it was packing potentially devastating sustained winds of 240 kilometers per hour (150 miles per hour), with even stronger gusts.

If the charts showing the direction of the storm are correct, we will take a hit, but not anywhere near like last year.

The eye will pass just north of us and we will only be hit with the pink area for awhile.

Not sure how long, maybe 6 to 8 hours as this thing is moving slow.

I'm just hoping to still have a roof, and the electric back on again soon.

They will shut the power down sometime today for safety, not sure when but in case it happens soon I wanted to say thanks for all of the prayers and good wishes.

Power will be off for awhile, and cell phones will be down also a few days probably.

Rob will be in touch with with our family down in the city so will be able to update some.

See you all again on the back side of this.

Still have electric for now, but made my post above before it goes out.

It will be hard to say... "well the electric is out now" when they cut it.

We just used a big rope to tie down the front part of the house to help hold the roof on when it comes.

Thinking about it now, the winds will be coming from the backside after it passes so far, so should go try to find some more rope for the back also if I can.

Lot of the neighbors are tying down their homes also.

Took some pics but my wife has the cord with her...

Knock Knock were home! :seasix:

Electric just came back on awhile ago and was really surprised to see it happen so soon.

While I had hoped it would be on soon, I have learned a long time ago that anything that can go wrong in the Philippines.. Usually will..

So was expecting a up to week maybe.

A Filipina friend of mine told me this advice the first week I arrived here back in 03, and she was right.. :yesnod:

I have not yet had a chance to read any news and hope there were zero lives lost as was the goal of the Philippines this time around.

I have to admit that we learned many valuable but hard lessons from Typhoon Yolanda last year.

Shortly after my last post the other day, the Police showed up here in our village and told us it was mandatory Evacuation and we had to go now..

I had planned to hang out here at home and maybe even post some more here till the electric went out, but left for higher ground about 6PM our time.

Rains and the high winds started around 10, and got really bad about 1am and continued well into the next day.

I finally went home myself while it was still windy and raining about 6PM the following day.

Not sure when it was completely over but went to get my wife and cubs about 5 am this morning.

This storm was no where near as powerful as Yolanda was last year, but did last a long long time as it was slow moving.

Luckily where we are.. the winds were very high, but not the powerful tree breaking.. blow your house away kinda storm like we had last year.

I hope those north and also the east of us fared as well.

It was high tide here this time, so I expect the storm surge hit a much higher ground than last year, and know that some people probably thought they were safe so did not evacuate as they should have.

We were listening to updates on the radio all through the storm, but the station was elsewhere so the language was Ilongo, and just a mix of Bisaya & Cebuano, so I did not understand most of it.. as even most Filipinos in the house did not also.

But Tata spent a few years living there so he could translate what was going on for us.

Anyways I'm rambeling.. I have about a dozen or more people here celebrating life here and drinking Rhum at the house tonight, and will post more later.

Good news though, I only lost 1/2 of my roof this year.. and our village only took minor damage. :hurray:

This year I packed everything away better, and other than roof and water damage, loss of my Banana crop... nothing else much was damaged.

And we are lucky enough to have our dry guest house to stay in till the roof is fixed. :seasix:

I read some of the news today and it looks like the deaths are 27 so far.

It will take awhile to know as many areas are still without phones.

They did a good job of making sure everyone evacuated this time.

I was thinking about this the other day how lucky we are to have days notice that a Typhoon is on the way and we can prepare for it.

Imagine 50 to 100 years or so ago they had no warning at all, and only knew when it happened.

Not sure how long to get the roof fixed, maybe about a week or two, My friend Dodong will be doing it again and start tomorrow after he is finished hauling in the fish.

He greets the fishermen every morning and carts all of their catches over to the store where the fishermen get paid after everything is sorted and weighed.

They all give him fish for his help, and it keeps him in food, and also has more to sell so he can buy rice.

Pretty good deal for him as he makes more in a few hours than he use to make for all day as a laborer.

I am happy as I expected to have to fix the whole roof. :seasix:

We will have to remove most of that side from about halfway up to the top, but a lot of the same material can be used again this time so wont cost as much.

Also on the banana's we didn't loose all, just some, and a few were almost ready for harvest anyway so we kept that fruit and they will be ready to eat in about a week.

They did well..

I only saw minor damage when I rode around the village yesterday.

The homes they have now are built from plywood with steel roofing so much stronger than what they all had before.. with the woven bamboo amakan and nipa roofs.

I think our house took the worse hit in our village this year.. :yesnod:

It had to be more than 50 I think.. and there were gust now and then that made you think the roof was going to fly off.

The radio here told us that they had raised the level to Cat 3 for Bantayan Island during the storm.

But whatever it was.. not bad at all compared to last year's Cat 5

I have not been anywhere yet but between Sillion and Baigad, and there was only one tree I saw that fell over the road.

I haven't seen any more, but going to guess those that did fall it was root and all, because of all the rain to the soil.

Some of the people are still living in tents from last year, but they dropped them and weighted them down so they didn't blow away.

Quite a few over in Sillion, but only Frankie here in Baigad, but his house is almost ready, not sure why he has been so slow getting it done as he has had the material for a long time.

I'm just glad it's over and was not that bad as we expected..
