View Full Version : [Woodworking] Christmas 2014 give away
so as not to clog up the PIF thread, and since i suspect more than a few peeps are interested in the below items, i'll do this separate thread. if you win, great for you! if you want to offer up something in the PIF thread, that's cool, but you don't have to.
rules (yes, there are rules :slap: )
one entry per person, no proxies (you have to post in the thread that you want to be entered in the drawing), no cost, no obligation, no warranties, no kidding.
i'll do two drawings, one for each item, you can enter either or both. if you've won before, that's ok, you can enter again. if you win, you'll PM me your address, and i'll ship it to you. or you can give it to someone else either on this forum or elsewhere. i can ship it to them directly, or you can pass it along with some proper wrapping paper and a sparkly bow.
if only interested in the bowl, post "bowl"
if only interested in the cutting board, post "board"
if interested in both, post "both"
or something that tells me which drawing to put your name into.
i'll accept entries in this thread only thru mid-night MST, Wednesday, December 3, 2014. this gives folks a chance to enter who are either weekend only, weekday only, or who have jobs and can't peep here during work hours.
bowl is 9-3/8" diameter x 1-7/8" high, about 1" deep inside, made of Ambrosia maple with Mesquite plugs on the bottom. it is not water tight, but good for dry goods (fruit, nuts, candy, keys...).
board is 6-1/2 x 11 x 1-7/8" thick, made of walnut, cherry, and maple

board please
about 14 hours late. sorry. :sadangel:
My wife saved the box you shipped our cutting board in. She said "Wow, that's a nice box. That was really packed well."
She's not easily impressed BTW. :cert:
i'd rather over pack than have it arrive damaged and have to repair or re-make it.

look at all those winners!
how long before you get them all done?
:cert:
:skep:
surveyor was here yesterday, got the shop located, architect is working on the various drawings, should be all ready for submittal to the county by early Jan, then after approval (3 weeks), we wait for the weather and start. :smash: hoping to be all done before my birthday in April. :smash:
Pro Tip - Order some doggie stuff from Chewy.com :seasix:
They have great prices, free shipping over $49, and REALLy nice big HD boxes with tons of packing paper inside. I get all my cat stuff from there and now have many great storage boxes. :cert:
That's who we get our dog food from. Two Great Danes go through a LOT of food :yesnod: They have good pricing, and like you said, free ,shipping! We save the boxes too because we have the house on the market and will use them for moving if it ever sells! :seasix:

if i recall correctly, Scooter wants another like the big, complicated, time consuming one i made for him (will have to get a shit load of lumber of various types), while Whiplash just wants a nice board (design TBD).
i'll hook you both up, as well as others.
funny thing, i made that one for CF many years ago for their charity auction, PeteW won it (i think he bid $400), and i figured that a cutting board was fairly easy to make, easy to ship, and would appeal to many people. now it seems i'm mostly known for my cutting boards, and not my furniture making (kitchens, baths, tables, entertainment centers, desks....), but since most of the ones i've made have been for our use, or family use, fewer of them have been seen outside a fairly small circle.
Cutting boards and bowls are easier and cheaper to ship. :dunno:
Wouldn't mind custom made furniture, but the shipping charges would be almost the same as the cost of the furniture.

exactly.
i made a little side table years ago of walnut, about 15x15 top, 30" tall with lower shelf. solid wood, no plywood or veneer.
one of this pair (the one on the left):
http://i937.photobucket.com/albums/ad214/brinkmancorvette/Woodworking/Walnut%20Tables/DSC_2325.jpg
figure add 4" of dimension in each direction (so a box at least 19x19x34) for packaging, and go on UPS.com to get a shipping guess. to your addy, ground shipping would be about $102, 3 day select about $284, with delivery confirmation. that's valuing the table at $500.
so yeah, making and shipping furniture, which is mostly air, is kinda pricey. :faint:
i had to make 2 boxes this week, as i couldn't find the right size, so i modified boxes to the proper size.
if i was in business, i'd have to account for all these extra expenses, packing materials, boxes, time to run to UPS, actual shipping costs.... pretty soon a 'simple' cutting board is getting very expensive.
