Yes, early Christmas present. I "was" going to store it at a friend's house until Christmas morning, but it seems silly to pay for something that's not used, AND, she'll now drive herself to school every single day. She currently only likes to take her Miata on Thursdays and Fridays, and will then borrow my Vette, or have my wife take her in the other 3.
This actually makes life a lot easier for my wife and I. Daughter will be much more independent, have all of the modern safety features like side and side-curtain airbags, traction control, vehicle stability, navigation....and be able to keep her little red Miata baby safe in the garage. :yesnod:

I was likely the only 16 year old I knew with two cars. I bought a 69 Camaro couple months after I turned 16 (August '77) and then a 67 Charger a few months later. Sold the Camaro, bought a 67 Chevelle and then sold the Charger. Traded the Malibu in during my senior year for a fairly new '76 RS Camaro. I had four cars in the last two years of high school. Over 160 since!:BADRACR1:
Congrats to the daughter.

Hope you have time! Come take it for a spin, it'll impress you a WHOLE bunch, I promise. But....only in the handling dept. HP, at 200, is barely adequate. Car weighs 2700#. 300 HP would be perfect. :yesnod: Having said that, as the car sits, it's PERFECT for a 16 year old kid, regardless of the fact that she has both Vettes at her disposal.
NO BACK SEAT ROOM. :hurray: It's truly a 2+2, so like the Vettes, she'll likely only ever have 1 passenger. Considerably less distraction for a new driver. :yesnod:

Will post the video tomorrow. She had NO clue what we were doing, even though she and I have discussed her having a BRZ. We left the house at 6:45 am this morning and left her a note that we were Christmas shopping, which was technically not a lie. :D
She was definitely brought to tears. :yesnod: When questioned about the car-related events in her life, I think she still rates hearing her Miata fire for the first time, just "slightly" above getting a brand new car. She definitely has her head screwed on right. :seasix:
Man...that car is/was on my short, non-corvette list but I hadn't driven one yet...hate to hear about the acceleration because that was key for me.

Acceleration is just fine for it's class. Handling is other-worldly. It is certainly not Corvette acceleration, but it's a **** load more fun to drive than my 2006 Corvette. :yesnod:

My kid has stood on her own two feet as a byproduct of our raising her. She had both mom and dad 24/7 for the first 10 years of her life, as I worked out of the house, and mom was full time mom.
"IF" my daughter had the shopping bug, or a sense of self entitlement, this transaction would have NEVER occurred. As a child who has never had a grade worse than an A-, is working on her 3rd Degree black belt, feeds the homeless, and is a car nut through and through, she is the 1 in a hundred who deserves something like this. Liz's kid is the only other one I've ever met who would qualify for this criteria. My daughter hates to shop and asks for, nor spends a dime. She's just like her mother.
Ya'll have watched G grow, and watched her build cars, and she's going into the car building industry. This is just another rung in the ladder to her ultimate success. We certainly live vicariously through our children, but if she were a ****-up, she'd be on her own in a BIG way. :yesnod:

You can always super/turbo charge it for about 4-5K. With 300HP, I'd drive one of these every day. It would be the modern day Supra. :yesnod:
Datawiz
11-29-2014, 6:50pm
I thoroughly enjoyed test driving the FR-S (same car mechanically) but I do agree, it does feel like it should have more balls.
Super/turbo on them is a bit more difficult than normal because of the abnormally high compression ratio but it is still doable.
Congrats to G-Wiz on the new car! I'm jealous!
This car will NEVER be a Supra, but definitely in the same spirit.
My wife and I were invited into the owner's "vault". He has TEN (10) 1967 Toyota 2000 GT's, including 1 of 2 ever made in convertible, for the Bond Films. From what I understand, he has 5 more. There were ONLY 351 EVER built, and this guy has 15. Those cars are worth a bare minimum of $500K each, but most are $1 Million minimum. Toyota insures his convertible for $50 Million every time they have him take it to an event. His garage is INSANE. :yesnod:

She's got a one-up on me though - I've never owned a "new" car.
I was incorrect, the #33 race car shown here is the one insured for $50 million by Toyota. Carol Shelby raced this physical car. Toyota has very little racing prowess, but this car is in their history. The Bond car is right next to it, but would be a minimum of 1.5-2 Million.

EDIT: Is that the louder exhaust option on the BR-Z? When we put our order in on an FR-S (that we cancelled later due to the dealer being a dick) we had the TRD exhaust selected because the standard setup just had no sound at all.
Stock exhaust. Sounds good, but certainly not loud. "Large" tips, yes, ... nice aural tone yes, but not loud. Not ricer, not Corvette, but just perfect for GWIZ. :yesnod:

Subi has more automotive soul than Toyota does, so I bet that's a true guesstimate.
Toyota better find that soul as they work with BMW to bring out the next Supra...Hybrid and all. :needcoffee:

Chris, I drove very comfortably on the way home from Lauderdale. Having said that, I've taken many hot laps in same car with a helmet. With helmet it's tight, but certainly doable. WAY better than many of the cars that I'm forced to drive.

Great question. It's a tough call.
The VW was given to me by my uncle and he taught me how to drive a manual in that car, I felt like such a car guy once I learned to drive it. hahahaha. It was falling apart, completely rusted out frame and underbody as it had spent most of it's life in Michigan.
The Chysler... oh, the Chrysler.... could have a party in that boat and not meet everyone. I fooled around with more than a few girls in that car. And it was my grandfather's, he left it to me when he died, so it had a few emotional ties to it.
The Firebird was the first car I bought with my own money. My father taught me how to buy a car with that purchase.
I know, all emotional, but that's why I'm a car guy. :seasix:

The Subaru looks nice, they make reliable, quality cars. When I was in HS, used WRX's and a rare few EVO's were becoming affordable to the wealthier kids...they handled on rails, but my 85 Vette, and a buddies 94 Vette would get em all at the beginning of 2nd and pull away...but they'd get us off the line every damn time.

We never brought the airbags online, so there is certainly a small safety issue. Beyond that, it's a matter of not risking her investment. She has several hundred hours (as do I) in that car and it's her baby. By not driving it as a DD, she greatly reduces the chance that it could get hit.

I was like that with my 85..but I had to drive it, lol...it was that or the 67 Tbird...both got hit in my HS parking lot mind you, as the same stop sign...but, you fix it and improve it, and go on I guess. In the years since, Ive invested, tens of thousands of dollars and God only knows how many hundreds, thousands of hours into various vehicles, building ,rebuilding, repairing, improving, and so on, Ive become proud of my investments, and I love to enjoy them. Ive found that, it is incredibly satisfying to drive around in something you have time and money in, more so than something you just purchased.
As for Airbags, Ive had...hell...
67 Thunderbird- No bags
76 Vette - no bags
81 Eldorado- No bags
85 vette -no bags
86 GMC K2500 High Sierra- no bags
89 Fleetwood- no bags
89 Jeep SJ- no bags
93 Jeep ZJ- Had bags, but I disabled them due to age
94 GMC K1500- No bags
95 Chevy K2500- No bags
95 Chevy K3500- No bags
95 F150- Had bags, module failed so disabled them
97 GMC K3500- No bags
98 Ram- Had bags, but disabled them due to age
01 Mustang GT- Had bags
Im short, so Airbags always made me nervous....and, so few of my vehicles Ive had in the past..12 years of my life had them, I guess Ive just become accustomed to not having them there. I understand their safety purpose, and if you got a new vehicle, they are a nice feature.

My wife has suddenly started thinking a Subaru might be a nice vehicle to replace her aging Acura RSX at a much lower cost than another Acura. I tend to agree. Just priced out a loaded Outback, it's under $35k.
I found an FRS locally, '14 with 9k, for $21k, nicely equipped that I'm going to go drive tomorrow. I want to have fun driving again...the old Element just isn't providing that. Lol

That's a pretty good price. Unlike Subaru, they don't do "premium" vs. "limited". You have to just add on the extras.
What color is it? Manual transmission I hope. :D

Wow, reading about the CVT (continuous variable transmission) in the Outback makes me rather dubious. So it's under-powered with essentially a late 90's tech engine and a slush-box auto. Not sure about that.

Most lesbians really don't care about that stuff. :D

They couldn't decide what color to go with...so of course it's red...and oh yeah, it's got three pedals. ;)

Yeah, I think my short-lived "Huh, maybe a Subaru would be OK" phase, that lasted about 2 hours, has came to an inglorious end.

Does it snow much in Missouri?

Sometimes. Usually we'll have about 7 days or so per year with some snow on the roads. More than that is an anomaly. Even with a big snow, they usually have the roads cleared off in 24 hours. We are in SW Missouri, up by Kansas City they get quite a bit more snow than us.

Absolutely. Love my MDX. I'll find something she likes, and at the very least it will have some sort of AWD. Probably. However, she has had a FWD car for 20 years now (various ones) and hasn't had a problem getting around here.

Went over and drove it at lunch...don't know why they say it needs more power...had plenty of it in my mind and coupled with the 6-speed was easily put down to the road. Bit of torque steer, but I expected there to be. Great handling...just wow, fun to drive. Seats were a bit tight...definitely made for a thinner build than mine, but not overly uncomfortable.
But...with a bum knee unfortunately getting in and out was a chore.
Oh well...I'll keep looking I guess. Too bad.

How do you get torque steer out of a RWD car?

Good point, torque steer would be the wrong thing, obviously, but I'm telling you the damn thing felt like torque steer out the ass when I hit it and turned in, hard. It felt exactly like torque steer and that's what I ascribed it to. Even made a mental note of it (which I'll now go back and erase...ok, done).
Wonder if the damage to the car that they told me was just a dent in the passenger door was something a bit more causing the issue? :confused5:
Regardless, I won't be getting one. Just too low to the ground for me.
Edit to add:
Did some Googling...others have reported similar things and attributed it to the tires being new and "sticky". Dunno about that...it's fricking cold out today! lol

Been there, done that. We bought a 2010 Outback Limited when they first came out. Decent car in many respects but boring. Fortunately, resale value is great on Subarus.
