View Full Version : YouTube trick - play as HTML5 instead of Flash.

When you type in or link to a YouTube video, add /html5 to the end (after the video code.)
Here it is embedded normally.
Alizee - J'en Ai Marre (Tubes D'un Jour) HD - YouTube
And as html5
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6omsDyFNlk/html5
Hope this works here sometime. Html5 videos load a lot faster and more efficiently. And of course have no issue with Apple devices.

The html5 link just redirects to the same vid URL you embedded. Watch the address bar. Tried on both PC and iPad, same result.
You have to change this in your google/youtube settings, it will then use that format for every YT video you watch, no need to alter the URL.
YouTube HTML5 option (http://www.youtube.com/html5)
Click the box that says "request html5 player".
:cert:
Edit: Being that it's a cookie-based site preference setting, it will retain that viewing format for videos you watch on the youtube site only, it will not change embedded videos here. I am not sure about embedding an html5 player for forum posts, I'll look into that.

No, the html5 link - if you right click on the video - is indeed html5. The embedded one is Flash. I don't think HTML5 works on mobile Apple devices currently though. Even if you set YouTube settings to HTML5, every once in awhile a Flash video will slip through, and you can add the /html5 to force it back to HTML5.

No, the html5 link - if you right click on the video - is indeed html5.It did not for me. I did right click on the video of the html5 link you posted. The URL redirected and it was playing in the flashplayer.
Only once I changed my preferred format setting did I get the html5 player version.

I can barely watch embedded vids. I have to go to YT to see them. The speed/motion is too slow on the imbedded ones for me. I will give this a try.

Same here. Try this. Click on the embedded video above and click the YouTube button to bring up the video directly in YouTube. Right click on that video. Is it Flash or HTML5. For me it's HTML5 because I'm using Chrome. When I do the same thing using IE10, it's Flash. And this trick doesn't seem to do anything in IE10, it's always just Flash.
Anyway it's something to play around with, can't hurt anything. I think this trick was first put out there for Firefox users actually. Chrome seems to do html5 by default.

How to enable HTML5 on YouTube - YouTube
Cybercowboy
11-16-2014, 11:09am
Following the instructions in that video in my last post, I went into IE10 and brought up http://www.youtube.com/html5 and clicked Enable HTML5 Player. Now videos are playing as HTML5 when I'm actually on YouTube. However, like in Chrome, the embedded videos here are in Flash. Not sure why that is really. If you are using Chrome this tip is pretty much useless because Chrome just does it for you automatically.
I certainly thought Apple would support Flash after Jobs croaked.

Flash sucks anyway. HTML5 is faster, better, etc.

That may be true, but how many sites don't work when viewed on an Apple device?

Apple sucks for not supporting Flash. This is where the blame lies.

I'm on an older computer still running Vista. For me the Flash version played better and smother than the HTML5 version. I am due for a computer upgrade though

Apple sucks for not supporting Flash. This is where the blame lies.Apple can play Flash all day long. They just don't want you to know it.
The Puffin browser for iOS handles flash just fine. I can view the analog clock on this forum, and use the gameroom on my ipad. :yesnod:
And as the topic of this thread, pretty much all online videos play in a flashplayer embedded on the page, Apple made a lot of work for themselves to facilitate that (while denouncing flash), but there is no way they could survive if they actually blocked ALL flash.

However, like in Chrome, the embedded videos here are in Flash. Not sure why that is really.Because the embedded player is hard-coded on this website.
When you change formats on the youtube site, you are seeing a completely different player embedded on their page. That doesn't change what's embedded here. The only way that can happen is if I create an embed code for an html5 player on the forum, which would be separate and different from the current flashplayer version.

This is just a test. (do not use this tag code, it will change).
If browser/setting (http://www.youtube.com/html5) compatible, you should find this plays in HTML5 format:

This is just a test for device compatibility. Let me know how it plays for you (better/worse/same).
Once sorted out, I will edit the current YT tag...But for now, this doesn't affect anything previously posted.

If you get the same error, what device/OS/browser? Do you see the cover image, and it errs when attempting to play?
I know this tag does not work on mobile browsers (tapatalk, forum runner)...But I've tried it in most other PC/iOS/Android browsers with perfect results.

The test worked fine for me on an iPad mini running iOS 8.1. I didn't notice any difference in performance. Safari browser.

Hey, this is awesome! Good job sir! Works great on my iPad and better than the Flast vids. For one, the page looks like it does in Chrome on my Win7 box, with a full-size player instead of a dinky one. Please please please make this the default!
I took a couple of screen shots from my iPad 3 running the latest iOS version in Safari. When they sync over to my iPhone I'll upload them to Photobucket and post them here, the difference is huge.
OK, here is what my first post looks like that started this off. This is a flash player.

Few other compatibility kinks to work out, still playing with it. :)

Tried in with Chrome on my iPad, same (good) results. :seasix:The problem is with Tapatalk and Forum Runner. Those mobile browsers do not support iframes, and using only the video param in a BB tag just leaves plain text, not even a link.
On anything else, it should work fine.
I've tested on:
PC: IE, Firefox, Chrome
iPad: Safari, tomic, Mercury, Puffin, Chrome
Android: Default, Firefox, Chrome

Unfortunately, Forum Runner lacks the same options for BB code conversion, so I can't see a way of making it work on that. The few of you that still use Forum Runner really should check out Tapatalk, it is very similar in use/appearance, but more feature-rich and just much better. It's a free app.
And for now, I am going to change this only for the vids posted using the [yt] tags only. Videos that are automatically embedded from URL (as in OP here) will require more work and some experimenting on my part (the coding is more complex). Something I'll putz with late at night when there's no audience, and allow some time to see if any unforeseen problems arise from this change.

Now that I've changed the [yt] tag, it seems Forum Runner does recognize it and leaves a link to the video...Which is better than nothing. They must have a conversion in place for that tag name.
