I thought I'd check it out, so I installed the TOR browser. It looks just like the surface web. I've tried the recommended Deep Web search engines, but it's the same tame stuff I'm used to. What am I missing here?

I disagree. Those people that got arrested are all going to need a lawyer, right? I'd say he's right on time.

It allows you access to hidden pages, it also gives you almost total anonymity online.

What sort of 'hidden pages'....like for ordering drugs??

It's much more insidious than that.

That, plus contact info for hit men, pedophile sites, bestiality sites, everything illegal you can think of. While those things may attract some people, the Deep Web is also a vast resource of scholarly articles, medical research, and info not available anywhere else.
Search engines for the "surface web" uncover only about 0.03% of the info out there. These search engines cannot access the Deep Web sites because so many of them require registration, and they are password-protected.
The deep Web is enormous in comparison to the surface Web. Today's Web has more than 555 million registered domains. Each of those domains can have dozens, hundreds or even thousands of sub-pages, many of which aren't cataloged, and thus fall into the category of deep Web. Although no one knows for sure, it's estimated that the Deep Web is 400-500 times bigger than the surface web.
I think that the main attraction of the Deep Web is that it practically guarantees anonymity. A user cannot be traced to an IP address, and your browsing habits can't be monitored. You can't be tracked because you searches/messages/etc. are run through a labryrinth of routers that picks millions of servers.
Yes, it's completely legal. Stories about a Deep Web sited called Silk Road being shut down by the CIA and the owner arrested are true. (Silk Road was a drug dealing site.) However, the owner was caught not because of any flaw in the Deep Web. He was foolish enough to use his surface web e-mail to launder the money. His domain on the Deep Web was even bought by him on the surface web.

FYI, interesting novel on TOR is Little Brother by Cory Doctorow.
Not a fan of his politics, but he writes a good tech novel.
The sequel, Homeland, decent as well...

I'm sure it does, but I'm having trouble finding any interesting sites. The TOR browser says to go to hiddenwiki for a list of links. None of the links work.

They didn't even ask about my 'net surfing habits during my clearance investigation.
They either don't know or don't care...and I suspect it's the latter.
Your surfing habits are probably too boring for them to care (which is a good thing).
