Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan said Thursday morning that 3-year-old Scott McMillan was tortured for three days last week by his mother and her boyfriend in West Caln Township. Then he died and was discovered on Tuesday.
Gary Fellenbaum and Jillian Tait were charged with the murder of Scott, a death Hogan called "an American horror story." Hogan said his office will seek the death penalty against Fellenbaum, 23 and Tait, 31.
When emergency room nurses finally saw Scott's bruised and battered body, "They wept," Hogan said.
Living in a West Caln trailer were Fellenbaum; Tait; Fellenbaum's wife, Amber; Tait's two children; and Fellenbaum and his wife's baby.
Fellenbaum and Tait are charged with torturing Tait's children - 3-year-old Scott and 6-year-old Ryan - with their fists, a whip, and a metal rod. Ryan survived the abuse, Hogan said.
Fellenbaum and his wife, are divorcing, but Amber Fellenbaum ignored the abuse, Hogan said, and has been charged with endangerment. It was Amber Fellenbaum who eventually called 911, Hogan said.
Hogan said the children were beaten with a homemade whip, curtain rod, and aluminum siding. They were hung by their feet and punched, Hogan said.
Scott McMillan had been taped to a chair and beaten. When officers searched the mobile home where the family lived, they found just one photograph of Scott.
In addition to living together, Fellenbaum, his wife and girlfriend also all worked at Wal-Mart, Hogan said.
