‘This is just bullsh*t’: Texas woman says state trooper harassed her over getting voter ID

A Texas woman was harassed by a state trooper while attempting to obtain the special ID required for voters, MSNBC reported on Friday.

“I’m 62 years old,” Lynne Messinger said about the encounter. “I’ve been voting for a long time, and this is just bullsh*t.”

Messinger told MSNBC that she was approached by the trooper during a visit to a state Department of Public Safety (DPS) office in south Austin. Messinger, who owns homes in both Texas and California and uses both residences, brought her California driver’s license to the office but said she had switched her voting residency to Texas years ago. State law, however, does not accept out-of-state identification as suitable for voting.

“It was like a Nazi interrogation about how I can’t be driving with a California ID,” Messinger said the trooper told her. “I was completely intimidated and freaked out.”

Messinger first encountered DPS officials last year, when she was told she could not obtain the voter ID because she did not provide a birth certificate. It took her months to get the document from New York state, where she was born.

“I’m well-traveled, I’m not easily intimidated,” Messinger said. “This guy scared the hell out of me. I can just imagine what other people – a little housewife or a Latino or whatever walks in there and this happens to them.”

Translation: I'm a white woman with money. Imagine how bad it must be for the poor brown and black people.

The Supreme Court approved a request last week by state officials to stay a ruling declaring the voter ID law unconstitutional. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg ripped the law in her dissent, saying it “likely imposes an unconstitutional poll tax” and will disrupt the state’s electoral process.

MSNBC reported that, since being signed into law by Gov. Rick Perry (R) 14 months ago, only 279 voter ID cards have been issued in the state.

When you move to Texas, you are supposed to surrender your out of state license and get a Texas license within so many days. Yes, she has homes in two states, but if she votes here, likely she is claiming Texas as her "home" home, and thus, she should have gotten a Texas DL years ago. The trooper called her on that. What's to prevent her from voting also in CA?

I wonder what the outcome of this encounter was? Did she get a Texas DL? Did she leave without the voter certificate?

Same thing would have happened to her in California. If you vote here, you need a California driver's license and your car should be registered here.

I personally think that nothing defines what state you are a resident of more than where you vote.

I imagine this is more prevalent than we think, but up until now, has generally been under the radar. If your car and DL reflect the same address in the same state, no one is going to question that.....unless you need that DL to vote, which is what happened here.

Hell. I would question it. If she has an id showing residence in two states, what is stopping her from voting in two states.

Good job msnbc. Keep pointing to the left there.

When the voter ID law was passed, it was EXPLICITLY reported that out of state ID's were not acceptable in any form. This "well traveled" (read: has money) woman had to know that. I guess she figured the rules didn't apply to her.

And another thought.... Surely it's cheaper to buy the DL and car license plate in TX vs. buying it in CA. Why would she NOT get the TX DL? Article states she's been here for years, which I assume would have been long enough for her CA DL to renew, at which point she should have switched over to TX if this is where she hangs her hat.

California always has issues with residents trying to register their vehicles in other states, usually Oregon, because registration fees are so cheap there and so expensive here. When I first moved to where I live now half the RVs in the area had Oregon plates on them. The CHP started cracking down on this around 10-15 years ago and you hardly see out of state plates here now.

What people don't realize is that when they register their car using a friend's or relative's address in another state. they are likely committing insurance fraud also. It is illegal to tell your insurance that your vehicle lives in another state when it in fact is here. If you have a large claim, it is not uncommon for insurance companies to investigate where the vehicle is primarily used as a way to get out of paying the claim.

Not really. Cali will NEVER become a red state. But Texas could become a blue.

If Texas goes blue. We are done. :(

Three of our last four Governors were two-term Republicans. And not long before that, Ronald Reagan. It is not inconceivable that California will have a Republican governor or Senators in the near future. There are lots of conservative people here.

Not sure. Very nice people and great neighbors. She's an RN at the VA clinic. She make three times as much here as an RN as she would make back home. They like it here, but where I live is not typical of California. I would call it more of a Midwest small town atmosphere.:yesnod:

You said never, not 2016. I think after Jerry Brown finishes his second term (he is pretty certain to be re-elected in November) The pendulum will swing as I have seen many times before, and the state will be up for grabs. California voted for Ronald Reagan both terms of his presidency. If we didn't do a winner-take-all many of those electoral votes would go to the Republican.

Also remember that on social issues, California can vote red, too. Gay marriage lost by a large margin here. Our large and increasing Hispanic population, being mostly Catholic, are also mostly pro-life. We also have a large Military population here with 43 bases in the state. They tend to vote conservative also.

How, exactly, does anyone think you can prove Texas residency with a California driver's license?

This smells explicitly of someone trying to vote in two states. :skep:

I wonder if she pays income taxes in both states? Almost all states require you to choose where you would like to establish your primary domicle, and voting address. They need to crack down because some people want to have their cake and eat it too. They take the parts of a state they like and disrgegard the parts they don't.

Don't you have voter ID laws to prevent no-residents from voting?

Instead of squabbling about what state your drivers license is from...

How about they just use your Social Security number for voter ID? :island14:

Don't have an SS or pay taxes?..... Then don't vote! :seasix:

And don't vote twice just because you have two states drivers license..

DUH!

Is the point to determine if you have the right to vote, or to make sure your state gets its fees and taxes for the DL..

Can't do that....because poll tax.

I hate red tape bullshit

The folks complaining that they don't have a TX DL or TX ID card have an option to go get a FREE election only ID, so even though damn near everyone here legally already has some kind of ID to, well, live life, there is a free ID option for someone who wants to vote but doesn't feel the need for an ID to collect welfare, to get a job, to do business with a bank, or any of the other myriad and sundry reasons people seem to gravitate to having a DL or state ID. Why is the election ID free? Because poll tax.

The argument now is that the SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS needed to get a election ID cost money. Getting a certified copy of your birth certificate, for example, costs money. It also costs money to either drive to the office to get that BC copy, or for stamps and an envelope to mail off for it. The poll tax argument is a valid one, but it has been reduced to minutia. I mean, it costs money just to GO to the voting location, unless you can walk there, and if you can walk to the polling place, you need to pay for food for the journey there and back.

The poll tax argument borders on the ridiculous and sublime. So far, in the couple of years we have had the law, a little over two hundred people have gotten the free election ID. This is most probably due to the cost of getting the supporting documents, if the naysayers are to be believed.
