Downloading 8.1 on the iPad now...But ApplePay will have to wait until I pick up an iPhone.
I love the concept though, and hope it becomes commonly available. :yesnod:

SeaSix, here is a way to reset your antiquated iPad 2 all the way back to iOS 4.3.0 if you really wanted to go that far back. All you need to do is to select your device, select the appropriate model, and then decide how far back you want to go.

If you look at my link, you'll see that the only version signed by Apple is the one mentioned there (7.1.2)

You should be fine with 7 on there, but if you want to go down to 6 you can download a 6 image and if it sucks, grab 7 from my link.

At this point, the only public firmware Apple is signing is iOS 7.1.2. This means, when you downgrade, you will be going down to iOS 7.1.2.

I have an iPhone 4 (messed up at that), and can't upgrade right now, so Apple Pay has to wait for the time being. By the time I get another iPhone, they'll likely be on iOS 9. LOL

Heck, I'd be happy with a 5s at this point so I can use the newer bluetooth for some of the gear on my bike and wrist.

Inasmuch as I got the link from an Apple supported tech site I would assume that, as long as you don't currently have malware on your computer, you would be safe.

With that said, I have used the site to revert an iPhone 5, an iPhone 5S, and an iPad Gen 3 with no ill effects. On the other hand, I did not sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night so you are on your own as to (a) my trustworthiness and (b) the efficacy of the site.

What's funny is i'm on a 5s and an Ipad 3 as well. I was having all sort of weird glitches on ios 8, and I was hoping 8.02 would fix them, it didn't. So far 8.1 seems more stable.

They weren't my devices. I did as their owner's requested. They seemed to feel that the upgrades from iOS 7.x.x to iOS 8.0 and later really slowed their devices down and since they couldn't take advantage of the new features of iOS 8 they might as well go back to something they were used to and happy with.

My personal devices run iOS 8.1, iTunes 12.0.1.26, and Windows 8.1 Pro.

We've been traveling this week and noticed that 8.02 still has a fair amount of wireless issues when using the Hotspot to connect our iPad Air -- dropping, not connecting, etc.

All of that up/down activity eventually freezes my 5S. I've had to reboot my phone 5-6 times per day while on the road. At home using our router's connection for both devices, the iPhone was much more stable.

Haven't yet tried to update the 5S to 8.2 - not enough memory for OTA. The iPad update went well.

I would not recommend putting 8.x on anything below an iPhone 5 or an iPad 3. I'm surprised they even let you. Those devices are far to slow to run it correctly, and often they don't have enough room anyway.

You can probably restore your backup image from iTunes that you made before you tried this. You did make a backup image before you put 8.x on, right? Right?

Hope so - that was one of the areas we had difficulty on the iPad, even on our home network. It often didn't recover the connection to the router after waking from the cover being closed. Sometimes turning WiFi off/on fixed it, most often it required a reboot. Interesting too: after a reboot, I see about 3 times as many SSID's than showed just prior to the reboot. Hmmmm.

I didn't have any problems before 8.x either. Thought it was my 5-year-old router, so I went out and got a new one. Didn't change the symptoms on the iPad Air (but it did fix some issues I was having with other devices).

In reading about 8.1 WiFi changes, I found a bunch of people complaining that their iDevices work great for about 10 minutes, then slow down dramatically (under 1Mb). Glad I don't have that problem...

I used my iPad to go to the website. I selected my iPad, model and the version of software I wanted for the downgrade. I hit the Download button. Another link appeared in blue that said Download Version 6.x.x.

All it does is open a blank page. The screen saver kicks in after a minute or so.

Same results no matter what version of software I try.

Um, you have to have a computer with iTunes on it to do this, look at the link I put up first, it has the basic instructions for the iTunes part. This is really easy. But you have to have a computer with iTunes. This is at the crux of your whole issue really - you've apparently never docked your iPad to a computer with iTunes, which allows you to back that sumbitch up before you plaster some unknown new software downloaded from Serbia on there.

Okay, using the original site (Download Firmware (IPSW) Files for iOS Devices (http://www.ipswdownloader.com/)) find the iOS version that you want and copy it to your Mac by clicking on it in the "Download" column . Make sure you know where you stored it.

Note - you may need to remove iTunes and install iTunes v.11.0.5 as Apple removed some functionality in later versions. iTunes 11 can be found at: (Old Version of iTunes 11.0.5 Download - OldApps.com (http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.php?old_itunes=12877)) If you do this, make sure that you remove all iTunes components including Bonjour. If your iTunes is not 11.1.0 or later you should be good to go without this step.

This process will bypass Apple's policy of only permitting downgrading one level or so. For instance, right now Apple is only signing iOS 8.1 (current) and 8.0.2 (the preceding version). Other versions are available on the site that I have provided but you must "force" the rebuild by placing your iPad in Device Firmware Upgrade (DFU) mode.

Here is the detailed step by step guide:
Step 1: Download iOS 6.1.X IPSW (Download Firmware (IPSW) Files for iOS Devices (http://www.ipswdownloader.com/)) for your device. Note that there are four variants for iOS 6.1.2 depending on your iPad specs so make sure you get the correct one.
Step 2: Connect your device to the computer via the USB cable and launch iTunes on PC.
Step 3: Put your device in DFU mode. To do this:
(a) Switch your device off.
(b) Press & hold Power + Home buttons to start the device.
After about 10 seconds, (about 4 seconds after the Apple logo disappears from screen), you can leave Power button but continue holding the Home button.
(c) Keep holding Home button for about 20 seconds.
(d) Release the Home button once you see a message popping up in iTunes saying:
iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes.
Your device should now be in DFU mode.
Step 4: Click “OK” to dismiss the message.
Restore iPhone in DFU Mode
Mac users: Press & hold Option key and click on “Restore iPhone” button in iTunes.
Step 5: Now browse and select the iOS IPSW that you want to restore to.
Please note that you can only restore to the latest iOS public build and cannot restore to older versions. So be sure to download the latest version of iOS for your device and then select it in iTunes.
iTunes will now begin the process to downgrade iOS 7 to 6.1.x. Be patient and wait till the process is complete. Once done, your device will reboot. That’s it!

This process will leave all your data intact on the iPad but you "may" have to reload some applications that were optimized for iOS 7 or iOS 8.

So, did you get your iPad successfully downgraded? Inquiring minds want to know!!!

I'm trying to follow your instructions now.

Your link to the old iTunes only has versions that work with Windows. I looked through their website and they don't have any for the Macbook Pro.

So I went to my Windows desktop. I tried downloading 11.0.5 iTunes but it only allows restoring to iOS 8.1, and it won't give the option for me to find the 6.1.3 iOS I downloaded and saved on my desktop.

I just checked the version of iTunes and it's 11.4.x - it must have updated itself on bootup. I'll try to downgrade the version to 11.0.5 again and attempt another repeat of the DFU downgrade to 6.1.3.

Sea Six
10-28-2014, 4:04pm
Somehow the iTunes 11.0.5 I downloaded on my Windows desktop got upgraded without me realizing it.

When I conducted the steps to restore the iPad in DFU mode it only gave the option of 8.1.

I let it finish the upgrade to iOS 8.1. Then I went back and deleted the new version of iTunes and reinstalled the 11.0.5 iTunes. It didn't want to run after being installed because it found a .ITL file that was created with the newer version of iTunes. I went to DOS and searched for the ITL file and deleted it, then reinstalled the 11.0.5 iTunes. It ran.

Then I put the iPad back in DFU mode and tried to restore it using 6.1.3 iOS. It ran and somehow tried installing 6.1.3 on its own (I didn't tell it where I had downloaded 6.1.3 and there was no option for me to do so) but it keeps crashing and saying it could not be restored.

The iPad currently has iOS 8.1.

Any ideas?

GentleBen
10-28-2014, 5:37pm
Okay, you need to be able to tell it where you stored the 6.1.3 IPSW. Using my earlier instructions, in step 4.d where I spoke at the Mac we will change to instructions for a PC.

Originally it said for you to: Mac users: Press & hold Option key and click on “Restore iPhone” button in iTunes.

PC users: Press and hold the left Shift key and click on the "Restore iPhone" button in iTunes. A new pop-up window would appear. Point it towards the IPSW file you downloaded for your iPad in the beginning, then click on Restore.

Note: Make sure that the IPSW file is for the device that you have whether it is WiFi only, WiFi/CDMA, or WiFI/GSM.

The error is an (immediate) 3194 error.

What's it gonna do for my ipod touch (4TH Generation!!)?Nothing.

4th Gen iPod didn't even get iOS7 (not powerful enough)...So 8 certainly won't be available for it.

The error is an (immediate) 3194 error. If you haven't looked into it or tried this yet, these instructions will tell you how to edit the hosts file on your PC:

Error 3194 in iTunes While Restoring or Updating iPhone/iPad? Here's a Fix (http://www.igeeksblog.com/fix-itunes-error-3194/)

It's really pretty easy.
With a PC, just open notepad or wordpad, open, and navigate to C: > windows > system32 > drivers > etc > and open the file named hosts. (it's just a short text file).
The bottom line should read 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com or similar (IP number might be different, just look for anything apple). Delete that line, then save the hosts file...Then try the restore again in iTunes.

That bolded line to delete is essentially blocking iTunes access to that Apple IP address, and that's what causes this error.

I've read mixed results of success in doing this, and because you're trying to downgrade, may not solve it for you...But it's easy enough to try and the change won't hurt anything.

If you're sure it won't hurt anything else I'll try it.

Nah, there's no risk to this.

If you have any doubt, just save a copy of that (unedited) hosts file somewhere else before you change it. Then if bad things happen, you can simply put it back as it was.

Absolutely no need. This thing is used for surfing the net and nothing else. There is nothing on here that I need.

And this thing is about to be used for target practice.

Apple has turned a corner since Steve Jobs left this world. They didn't even try loading iOS 8 on an iPad 2 before releasing it. There are so many issues that would have been immediately apparent, it's obvious they didn't.

They aren't sufficiently beta testing their software any more, same as Microsoft. They used to. Their products cost more but since you knew they were going to work it didn't matter.

At this point, with their buggy software, their products are grossly overpriced.

Their new office building, when complete, will be powered by Steve Jobs spinning in his grave.

I found the file called hosts in the directory you described.

It has no lines in the file with the apple text.

In fact, it has no lines that aren't comment fields (i.e. no lines in the file serve any useful purpose).

I did look at mine earlier, and found no such line either, but I don't have iTunes installed on this computer.

I've never attempted reverting an OS like you are trying, so I have no further suggestions.

I have a suggestion: Put that piece of shit on craigslist or trade it towards a new iPad or use it for target practice and move up to a modern tablet, Ipad or anything else. Your time is more valuable than the aggravation of trying to polish that turd.
