Rob rolled down this morning with his new toy.
I heard it coming 1/2 a mile away.
It's a 1948 John Deere.
Rob is an engineer and he said it takes every bit of concentration that he has in order to drive the thing. It's complicated.
He wanted me to take it for a spin but I wussed out and said no...:Jeff '79:
I'll drive it at his house. :D

Oh, you gotta take that ole pig for a spin. :yesnod:

I remember playing around with some old Masseys and AC's 25 years ago. A bitch to get 'em started but they were good strong machines.

:Jeff '79: Ya I will, but in his field. I didn't want to trash my lawn, my house or my barn.... There was potential there....

You guys would love living near my small town. At the recent Pear Festival they had on display about 20-30 restored and customized tractors. John Deere, Massey Ferguson, Ford, etc. Also lots of other antique farm equipment. At Christmas time we have a lighted night time parade which features many of the tractors fully lit up and decorated. It's a custom in my county that during parades all people in the parade throw candy to the children that are watching. It's better than Halloween. The Corvette club I was in does these parades also. One year we walked alongside the cars and handed out teddy bears to the kids. Fun times.

In a town near me, Collins, I believe, they have a "Drive Your Tractor To School Day" for the seniors. The participation that it attracts is amazing.

Really? Sensory overload on Model B JD? Hell, it has electric start  I was driving John Deere Model B's and Model A's when I was 11 years old.

Can you chew gum and walk or do you bite your tongue?

Rob's father cut his teeth on one at 4yrs old... Literally!
He was standing and driving it as a 4yr old and it jerked on him. He knocked out his two front upper baby teeth on the steering wheel nut.
That's why he got it. A sort of sentimental thing for his dad who has since passed. I guess that he wants a thread to his dad in a way.

I dunno Jeff... Rob said it's tricky.

You do have to pay attention since it's not normal car controls ( hand clutch, steering brakes, hand throttle ) but if you keep it in a low gear, you'll be fine.

Is he planning on keeping the original paint on it? It's only original ONCE :yesnod:

Ya, what you see is how it will stay. It was barned all of it's life except for when it was out working, obviously. It was worked hard in it's 65 years.
She's a great runner though.
One question. It knocks. Is that normal for that two cylinder?
Here's a video of it winding up...

Sounds perfect to me. Fuel rattle is common in these oldsters... I'm surprised it does not smoke more...that is common as well.
