Venezuela wants extra OPEC meeting to halt oil-price drop

Caracas (AFP) - Venezuela will ask for an emergency meeting of OPEC countries to try to halt sliding oil prices, Foreign Minister Rafael Ramirez said Friday.

A barrel of Venezuelan crude closed at $82.72 on Friday, a drop of $3.17 for the week, one of the lowest levels in the past three years.

"We are going to ask for an extraordinary OPEC meeting. We need to try to coordinate some sort of action to stop falling oil prices," Ramirez said at a Caracas news conference.

"I am convinced this is not due to market conditions, but is price manipulation to create economic problems for large oil-producing businesses," added Ramirez, who is the former oil minister and ex-head of the public oil company PDVSA.

This year, Venezuelan crude has averaged $94.99 per barrel, compared to $98.08 in 2013 and $103.42 in 2012.

"It doesn't suit anyone if the price of oil falls below $100 a barrel," Ramirez said.

The next regular meeting of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is scheduled for November 27 at the group's Vienna headquarters in Austria.

According to Ramirez, the price drop is due to an overproduction in non-OPEC countries -- a reference to shale oil, of which the United States is the world's top producer.

While it has some of the world's biggest oil reserves, Venezuela only produces 2.4 million barrels a day, which bring in 96 percent of its foreign currency reserves.

The 12 members of OPEC, who pump about a third of the world's crude, said Friday that world demand will grow by 1.05 million barrels per day (mbpd) to 91.19 mbpd this year.

For 2015, OPEC predicted demand to reach 92.38 mbpd, unchanged from its previous forecast.

Brent oil prices tumbled this week to a four-year low on plentiful crude supplies and on demand fears arising from global economic uncertainty.

Oh, the irony!

The demise of OPEC is approaching. Many of their members have nothing beyond oil with which to trade. Nothing.

Oil will continue to fall, pricewise, and prices of EVERYTHING exported TO them should increase exponentially.

They, (OPEC), never showed the slightest concern how oil prices held the world hostage.

The world can do without their oil. Can they do without everything else? Let's find out...

:iagree:

And whats really interesting is that The USA is becoming more and more energy independent as well as reducing gasoline demand. No matter what OPEC does they are losing power over the USA.

It's not only the USA. Look at Germany with their solar and wind power as just one example. Also all of the newer cars getting much better gas mileage. Fuel usage has been on the decline for the last 10 years, at least. The only thing holding up the price of oil for that entire time, has been commodity traders.

Now, even they are fleeing in droves. This will however, have a negative impact on oil company stocks. Which for a short time will drive the market down. This is not a bad thing IMHO as I believe the market as a whole is over valued. :cert:

Edit: Also the recent articles about the .GOV thinking of raising and or changing the fuel taxes due to revenues falling speaks volumes.

The two OPEC countries being hurt the most by falling oil prices are Iran and Venezuela. They rely the most on oil exports as a percentage of their income.

Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch

The loss of revenue to feed those governments might help foment revolution and an overthrow of those governments. Nothing enrages people like starving in the streets while the elite in government have full bellies.

Never worked with Cuba the last 50 years. It won't change a thing.

Cubans should have been liberated a long time ago. JFK fuked up his try and no president since has the balls to do it.

Sadly, we go all over the world trying to liberate chit holes. But won't help Cuba 90 miles away.

Cuba could be a real money maker. Think of all the rebuilding and you can get there with a go fast 30knt ferry in just 3 hours or so from Keywest. But we would rather blow money on the ME area.

I agree w you. And it may snow in Florida. :Jeff '79: :seasix: :cert:

Gas here at an independent station called Spirit, it was $3.39 for regular. Chevron and the others are running $3.60 today. Hope it falls even more to around $50/barrel.

62 peso for a litre Coke bottle of gasoline.

Not sure how many litre in a gallon, but the exchange is up to about 43.5 to the dollar for me now.

I know the gas is expensive, but don't use very much for just our motorcycle.
